They don't.
Play and learn is what this game is about. This is also why you shouldn't copy some build and buy the gems you need for it when you start playing the game, make build that will work with the rewards you get. Nothing to see here.

It's a barter system, so the worth is between the buyer and seller. There is no list of prices.

I think it's a fair question since the value of skill gems does vary wildly.
The main thing that affects the price of a gem is whether that gem can be gained through a quest reward. There are immediately many more of them in the economy and a ready means of getting one if you have the time so it limits the cost. My experience in the trade chat is that it will cost somewhere between a Chance and an Alchemy Orb to land one of these, perhaps a little more if the gem in question is rewarded in Cruel difficulty. The remaining gems that are available through drop only can be more expensive. The less popular gems are probably still around the Alchemy to Chaos mark, the most sought after skills become more expensive rapidly. I'm not certain of all the most popular gems but I feel that Greater Multiple Projectiles, Elemental Proliferation and Added Chaos Damage are examples. GMP gems are frequently offered for several chaos gems, perhaps 2 or more Gemcutter's Prisms, something like that. Finally gem quality will most likely up the price. Some skills have unremarkable bonuses for quality or are so niche that the price won't be greatly affected. In most other cases the price will rapidly inflate with quality, several chaos or GCP for quality sought-after gems is common. As the quality of these increases nearer to 20% they become incredibly valuable. Overall the advice above is sensible; monitor the trade chat for a little while and you will get a feel for it quite quickly. There are one or two sharks about but in general I found a lot of traders very reasonable. |

" I love when people confuse "barter system" with "uncertain valuation" You can have a barter system with standardized trade rates and you can have a gold/single currency system where values are unknown or fluctuate wildly. The two concepts have no relation to each other. |

prices are pretty standardised for all the skill gems, theres some variation of course (as its a barter system) but in general the gems are sorted into rought tiers of cost.
This is based on usefulness, rarity (portal gem in this case) and whats available from quest rewards (check the wiki for this). Best suggestion i can make is keep the trade chat open. As a rough guide though, quest reward gems (except dex ones) are about 1 alch SC. Good non-quality gems are ~1 chaos - 1 gcp depending on buyer/seller. Quality gems less than 10% arent worth any more than regular ones in most cases, best used to sell to vendor unless you'll use them yourself. 10-14 is gem cost +1 gcp, 15 is gem cost +2 gcp and above that depends on what you want to pay. and so on. check the wiki! |
