Steam - disk busy

Hello,

I'm using POE through steam. When a patch is out, steam tries to download it, but it takes much time, because of "disk busy".
I don't know why steam thinks my disk is "busy". I still have 35Gb of free space on the disk, IMO it is enough for a 5Mb patch...
It is kind pof frustratiing, why I have to download a 5Mb patch like 5-10 minutes long.



Any advice to this problem would be appreciated.

I had the same issue. I disabled my antivirus and Malwarebytes and I also left my computer for about 30 minutes. I don't know if the disabling of the antivirus fixed the problem, or just the inactivity on my computer.

Got the same problem on PoE and another game when i try to download and i get this "disk busy".
Is this an issue that many has or there maybe cause of some hardware/software error?

It is unrelated to other software, but more an issue with how the game stores its data.
The updates are generally small changes to large files.
To update it, the whole file has to be written out in full, from start, to the point of the update, and then to the end.
Other games on steam have seen this issue too, and is worst on slower hard drives.

The behaviour is not new, but only recently did steam add an indicator to show when this was happening.
Previously it would have just looked like the download kept stalling.

Best we can do at present is wait it out, for it will complete eventually, downloading in small amounts between long pauses.

It may be a steam specific issue, but I see no indication of a solution short of the developers making substantial changes to the game data, by splitting it up into greater numbers of smaller files.

Having the same issue for PoE only, not for other steam games. Several MB patch can easily take 15 minutes spent in "preallocating" and "busy writing to disk".

This feel like not issue in Steam or PoE alone, but the interaction. Perhaps PoE using wrong steam API or something like that...

Also the fame takes 5 minutes after launch to load, my disk is not super fast but all other games can do much better.

Its steam problem. After the new steam update that added disk busy feature steam writes whole big files even if there is small patch. For example, patching Payday 2 can take more then 30 min even with 30 mb patch.

Yes, I have faced a similar issue before. I had even errors while downloading, but after disabling my K7 Antivirus, it worked fine. Temporarily disable the antivirus you have or a firewall then try again.
