How exactly do I increase my spell damage?
Does my weapon damage even matter for my spell damage? let's say I'm using the spell Freezing Pulse...How do I get the damage of that to increase other than to level up the skill gem or use support gems. Is the only way to increase the damage by putting points into "increased spell damage" in the passive tree and finding that stat on items? It doesn't even seem like the weapon damage on the weapons I find does anything for my spell damage.
Also I see there is a stat in the passive tree called "increased cold damage"...Does that increase the damage of a spell that does cold damage? Or does it only increase the cold damage you may cause from using normal physical attacks. I'm just a bit confused on how I get my damage up. My friends are playing melee classes and are doing so much more damage than me because their damage increases with the physical damage you get from weapon damage...How do I get MY damage up? |

" Spells are skills that gain levels, just like you do. So, a spell gem equipped will naturally get more powerful over time. Also, you can get gear and passive skill nodes that will increase your spell and elemental damage. |

the weapopn damage on your wand or whatever has no effect on spell damage. Its for physical attacks with that weapon only.
If you want to increase your spell damage like freezing pulse, then you need to find items with +% spell damage, or invest in passives that give +% spell damage. Passives that give a bonus to cold damage would affect any spell or attack that delivered cold damage. Also remember that you can boost certain spells like freezing pulse with +% projectile passives also, since freezing pulse is a projectile also. Lost to Apathy

So what you are saying is the damage on the weapons I use doesn't even matter for my spell damage?
Now lets focus on a spell like Freezing Pulse which the gem says its a "Cold, Projectile, Spell" There are passives in the passive skill tree that say "increased cold damage" and "increased projectile damage"...Will these passives increase the damage of Freezing Pulse? |

Ah looks like my questions were answered by the second poster as I was typing them. Thank you so much for the helpful info!
Also I'm assuming "increased elemental damage" would help too! Last edited by Graybes#7550 on Jan 27, 2013, 10:15:23 PM

Well, you could either:
- Get a wand with spell damage (I owned one with + 48% spell damage, too bad I sold it) - Get spirit shields, not only do they provide ES some of them (if lucky) provide a decent amount of spell damage) - Upgrade your skill gems - Grab elemental nodes, nodes that is similar to your skill gem. |

" Yes. Increased elemental damage, increased spell damage, increased cold damage all add together to boost your cold spells. Apart from certain uniques (generally designed for niche builds), the best weapons to use for spellcasters are wands, sceptres and daggers. They all have an innate bonus of some kind that will affect your spells (or at least most spells), and they are likely to roll useful mods on top of that. |

Increased Elemental stats usually are labelled for specific purposes.
So if a node says increased cold damage, it'll increase ALL cold damage unless it says so. Such as Increased cold damage with weapons. Or increased cold damage with spells. Etc. "Minions of your minions are your minion's minions, not your minions." - Mark

I really appreciate all the help. Might have to rethink what class I play after I search for where all the cold damage passives are

So, does my freezing pulse damage increase if i pump a node that says "increased cold/elemental damage with weapons" ?
from what i read, it only adds to the damage that's on the weapon and not freezing pulse or spells. |
