Desync problem

Well you guys probably up to your chin by now about the same bug reports on this subject and wish you could throw a stone to the next guy who mentions it again. Just kidding :)

I am playing for quite a long time now (since early closed beta). Since patch 1.0.1 I'm experiencing more and more desync during gameplay in random intervals some times making playing the game quite a suffering. The recent Patch 1.0.6 just made things even worse. Either that or I had so many desync rage that I actually imagining that it made worse when in fact it's the same.

Sometimes I engage a mob then he/she suddenly "teleports" back to it's previous location, even though he/she doesn't have that kind of ability :) . If I continue to attack him/her it sometimes makes me "teleport" with the mob. Usually if that happens I end up completely surrounded by 10-15 mobs. 50-50 chance that either I slaughter them or they slaughter me. If it goes desync again I doesn't even stand a chance since I wouldn't even be able to hit them back.

So please fix this problem please guys, cause it not only makes hardcore league almost impossible but ruins standard league gameplay as well.

Otherwise this game is superb, you guys really deserved that award for it and all the support.

Thanks: Peter
desync is a known problem and there isn't much you can do to "fix" it from your end other than ensure you don't have a bad connection (which can make the effects of desync worse) and don't use skills that are known to cause desync (any movement-based melee skills really).

The #1 problem with desync is mainly a play-style one. Don't use cyclone, multistrike, flicker strike, or any other movement-based melee ability. I know that can be less fun sometimes, but those are by far the largest contributors to desync. Avoid those types of skills and you'll probably see your instances of desync almost completely disappear.

The second biggest cause of desync is positional.

To understand this, you have to understand how PoE works from a Server and Client perspective. When you play PoE, you're really playing on the Server. Everything that happens in the game is done on the Server and the Server's word is law. What it says goes. Now.. if everything had to WAIT for the Server to respond, the game would feel very laggy/choppy and crappy, so they do some "emulation" on the Client side to make things appear more instant and smooth. The problem is, this "emulation" doesn't always calculate everything exactly the same as the Server. So this is what desync is. The Server and Client do not agree anymore on where you are in the world. You're SEEING one thing on the Client, but the Server has you somewhere else. The "teleportation" you see is the Server telling the Client where you REALLY are, and the Client agrees (because the Server's word is law) and you jump. This is why the movement-based melee are the worst offenders and why I'm getting to the second one.

Now.. positional you can see how desync happens. Lets say you go to run through a pack of mobs. The Client performs its "emulation" calculation and determines that you successfully ran THROUGH the mobs and made it to the next room. Problem is... mobs aren't hollow. You cannot actually pass through their solid forms. Sometimes you can "bounce" off them in just the right way to make it past the group. The problem is, from the Server's perspective, you got STUCK on a mob, and now the rest are closing in around you cutting off your escape. Now you have nowhere to run to on the server, and you're being beaten to death by the pack. You SEE yourself safely in the other room, but your health is going down and eventually you teleport back and see yourself in the middle of the pack... and probably die. This can also happen with terrain.

The best way to avoid THIS type of desync is to:

1) not run through packs of mobs when you can avoid it.
2) try not to "clip" any terrain (run too close to it) where you could get snagged. This also includes crossing narrow bridges with creatures on it. If there is any possibility that the Server can calculate you as becoming "stuck" on something, then this has the potential to cause desync.

With these things in mind, you can be more aware of what causes desync, and more actively avoid it. Hopefully then your instance of desync will lessen and you will have a better play experience (until GGG can clean up the emulation and prediction code to better be in sync, or force more rubber-banding).
Thanks for the answer.

Problem is that movement based melee skills are the only ones that can get me out of potential death situations.
I think you misunderstood that "teleportation" problem. It's not happening because I run trough mobs. I don't do that, I'm no rusher. What I experience is quite the opposite. for example a mob comes into the area where I fight or simply just skimming trough the loot. When I'm finished what I was doing I attack the mob. After a few seconds I realize I'm having desync, cause I'm ain't doing any damage to the mob. Usually I stop then immediately. If I stop too late I get "teleported" to the another place where that particular mob was before and that's when I find myself cornered or surrounded. Usually I try to escape with movement based melee skills only to find myself get pulled back again and again.
So you see it's the mob's position that the server doesn't agree with. So the mob gets "teleported" back to whence he/she came from and if I'm still engaged with the mob then so do I. I sort of figured out that on my own of course. The thing that wasn't clear is to what's causing it.
Movement based melee skills. Figures. If something have to go wrong it's the most useful skills that got affected by it. Another annoying thing is I got perfect Internet connection and one of the thing why I got installed the faster Internet connection in the first place is that I can play MMO's smoothly.

Well, rest assured the patch will come :)

I understand the teleportation problem just fine. It's because of desync. I'm not saying that you only get teleported if you run through mobs. I'm saying that desync is the cause of your teleportation, and one of the causes of desync is running through mobs. Does that make sense?

GGG is constantly tweaking their systems, and I hold out hope that eventually they will fix the melee abilities that are the major cause of it. Until then, I don't play a melee character that uses any of those skills on a regular basis. I'm currently playing a Spectral Throw Scion and the only "movement" ability I have is Leap Slam which I only use to escape certain situations or jump gaps. I immediately /oos afterward to make sure I didn't get desynced from the usage of that ability.

I know it sucks not to be able to play certain classes/abilities because of these issues.. but I find that there are a lot of other fun options.. like my Freeze Pulse witch, or my Poison Arrow ranger... etc. I don't need to use desync skills right now to still have a lot of fun.
