What SP are you on for Windows XP, and what is your DirectX version? I would try removing the game software, running Windows Update to load all the latest system updates and patches.
Then, install DirectX from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35, and install the latest driver pack for your graphics card. Then reinstall the game.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, it may be possible you have an unsupported hardware configuration, or you could be trapping a bug, in which case, you could try entering a bug report.
