I don't have much experience with this, but probably for a few reasons.

If you have a choice between similar dps boosts with one being physical and one being not-physical, it's probably right to diversify your damage to deal with mods. Not to mention that physical damage can't burn, and added fire damage benefits from both physical damage boosts on passives/gear as well as elemental damage. Q20 on both gems cuts the % difference to 5%. Physical proj damage has a downside (-10% attack speed) while added fire damage does not. Overall added fire damage is almost certainly a tooltip dps boost over projectile, especially if 20/20, but it's similar enough that diversifying your damage output would probably be superior regardless.

im running 5l
SA - faster attack - pierce - add fire damage - power charge on critical
and i have 25k dps of frenzy skill and 12k dps SA with 5 frenzy charge and 5 power charge.
SA have 5 arrow, plus 1 = 6. Why have to use chain for it?

This is newbie friendly build and it can be edited in the way to lvl 100. Im also trying this out to see how it works (RUNNING SOLO SO NO IDEA ABOUT TEAM PLAY). Many friends having troubles to play end game maps and wanted me to make ranger what is playable and works in end game maps.

3,5% life rege. (Saves your potion charges.)
Decent DPS
HIGH life
Armor is 10k+ when grace leveled and you're wearing decent gear + you can use Jade Potion to boost it even more.

4L: SA + Chain + Power charge on crit (or added fire) + Faster attacks
5L: SA + Chain + Power charge on crit + Added fire + Faster attack
6L: SA + Chain + Power charge on crit + Added fire + Faster attacks + Crit multi

4L: Frenzy + Life leech + Culling strike + Increase rarity
5L: Frenzy + Life Leech + Culling Strike + Increase Rarity + Added Fire
6L: Frenzy + Life Leech + Culling strike + Increase rarity + Added fire + Faster attacks
(im using increase rarity for bosses because of the lootz! :3)

4L: Spell totem + Skeletons + Minion dmg + Totem & minion resistance (if you're dps slack, this helps you alot)

4L: Reduced Mana + Grace + Hatred + Vitality/Resistance aura?/Clarity (what fits best for you)


I prefer chain over pierce since in this build you take pierce note.
With mana leech note, you dont have to use mana leech gem.

Bandits:
Normal: Help Oak (40 life)
Cruel: Help Oak (18% phys dmg)
Merci: Help Kraityn (Frenzy Charge)

Like i said above, im trying this out and its newbie friendly. So far works fine (lvl 60)

Good point, and i think that split arrow build dont need LMP or GMP or chain, its 5 arrows on high level.
For now i think about 6L like that:
Split arrow,Physical Projectile Attack, Fater projectiles, Attack speed, Blood Magic, Added Fire damage.
For 5L, I think this is ideal, assuming you use or are around Hatred aura.

Faster Attacks

Added Fire Damage - I haven't done comparisons of this against the new projectile physical damage gem, but I think fire damage is better unless the other one does significantly more DPS. This is because physical reflect can get really nasty and this diversifies the damage, as well as enabling use of Weapon Elemental Damage which is quite powerful.

Weapon Elemental Damage - It's simply a very strong gem when combined with Added Fire Damage and Hatred aura. I used to use the Critical Damage gem before, but I've realized this one does more DPS even with no elemental damage on gear, as well as reducing the severity of physical reflect.

Chain - This is a controversial one but I'm convinced it's best for most builds. What you have to consider that many people don't realize is not only does it allow you to hit more targets, but it can chain to the same target more than once. For example, let's say there's 2 zombies beside each other. Each arrow from split arrow hits each zombie, then chains to the other zombie, and then chains back to the original. So although each arrow does 50% less damage as part of the gem, you actually end up doing 50% more damage per arrow even when there aren't a lot of enemies around. The only times you'll experience the 50% less damage penalty with this skill is when you should be using frenzy anyway. With pierce, you're quite unlikely to hit multiple targets unless there are big packs clumped together. The downside is the 200% mana multiplier though.

I then also put a Power Charge on Crit in my single-target Frenzy chain which gets used often enough that I have reasonable uptime on them.

been playing with SA - Added Fire - Added Physical Projectile - Faster Attacks - WED in Nemesis

have the Pierce passive and don't care for Pierce gem. if I want increased Pierce rate, I use Projectile Weakness

haven't tried Chain

if I had a 6L, I would add Life Leech gem because I play Nemesis

should probably consider trying Power Charge on Critical in place of WED because crits make the build fun
