Dupe & Cheat Preventions

Hey there!

I'm trying to convince more of my friends to play Path of Exile, and one of them is concerned about duping like what happened in Diablo 2. I remember reading a thread that mentioned of their various methods to prevent duping and other forms of cheating that are in place but I can't find it now :(

Since the game is online only (D2 was not), I imagine that duping and cheating is going to be pretty difficult to do.

I assume it will happen, more sooner than later.
But I trust the devs, Im pretty sure they will permaban everyone using it or doing it as soon as they discover it. They aren't like Blizzard I guess.

GGG is not Blizzard - that alone should be peace of mind on this or any other similar issue. In Chris I believe!

Most recent patch notes: GGG added encryption to the game protocol.

So since the items are server-side, duping would have to involve:
1) Exploits regarding either the PoE client or the PoE servers themselves; in other words, you do certain actions, the game performs the dupe for you. This doesn't require breaking encryption because it would piggyback the client.
2) Exploits regarding a secondary program sending false information to the PoE servers, such as "a Mirror was just used on this item, dupe it please" without actually having a Mirror (or perhaps just without using it). These types of exploits would require breaking encryption.

Chances are we're pretty well protected against #2. #1 is something that might happen, but the game has been tested pretty heavily already so more likely not. I wouldn't expect much duping.

Suppose a dupe has a very long paper trail after the fact; maybe someone made a few dozen Exalts.

Do you go down the list of everyone who obtained an exalt from this person knowingly and unknowingly that they appeared through malicious means? Do you hunt down everyone who used them, traded them, sold what they were used on, and etcetera, and revoke every inch of those actions?

How many potentially innocent parties are they willing to burn to remove the effects of a bad apple?

Duping in PoE won't be nearly as easy as in D2, so don't worry.

Its quite inevitable, no game has ever proven itself immune to duping.
