Server Gateway - What Difference?

Hi all,
I'm just wondering if apart from ping(lag), what difference does the gateway selection make? Sydney is where I play from, so Singapore is a bit better ping wise but I'd rather play with US folks. Can I connect to the Singapore gateway and still play with people connecting to the US gateway? Is the answer to the above differnce for PvP? Thanks! Last bumped on Aug 7, 2017, 1:19:06 AM

Global chat is global, so you'll always be talking to people all over the place.
When you join a party, the instance is created on the gateway of the player who enters first. Players from other gateways can join these just fine, but odds are they'll notice the latency increasing :P PvP is gateway restricted so you don't 'randomly' end up lagging or face someone with high latency. |

As well as what Vipermagi said, I wanted to add that you can easily log in through a different gateway and still access your account as normal. So your characters aren't locked to a certain gateway. (I've tried this in closed beta, and I'm assuming it will stay the same later.)

Thanks guys, appreciate the replies.
Just to confirm, one can play a character on any gateway? Obviously one has to login each time, but there is no "gateway character lock" like say, Diablo 3. |

yes. characters are available for any gateway you use.
there are no 'regions' in regards to the servers. the gateway is merely the path you are connecting to the server through, |

Guys when I'm changing my gateway its only affecting my latency/ping while I'm in town but as soon as I step outside my latency/ping shoots straight up to 300 irrespective of the Gateway I logged in through. How can I fix this?

another question related to the first.
when i go back to town i sometimes get 400 ping there. is this because that town instance is created by a player on a different gateway? |
