It doesn't "just" add a second option, it completely trivializes the first option. As I've said already, allowing people to switch the types of their weapons would effectively remove weapon types, as they would have no significance whatsoever. Found a really good sword, but you're specced into hammers? MAKE IT A HAMMER. If you can switch freely, there's just no point of having them.

From the looks of Ironman's post, I assume that the items are expended on use (and there is indeed no gem-switching system: the closest is a gem-randomizer, which isn't the same thing.) and something like that I could possibly agree with being in the game.

I'm a huge fan of individual freedom, but trivializing a part of the weapon functionality just because of convenience seems very unnecessary.


I never said it would not randomize it but they have already implement systems that already change stats and slots on items and even upgrade them. Adding the ability to randomize the weapon type wouldn't harm it in anyway as you would be just as likely to get something just as worthless.

A random type switcher wouldn't serve much purpose, other than piss the user off in the very likely event that the target weapon type isn't what they want. It works for gem slots due to them being far more customizable: especially with items with multiple slots, you're almost always going to get something you can use.

If a weapon-type switching system was to be implemented, I could agree with this sort of system:

Orb of Re-Equipment
Changes the target weapon's type into a different type. (Same basic category - 1h/2h/ranged)
Expended on-use.

The orb would be worth a fair amount, and by definition not very accessible.
Each weapon type should have it's own unique properties, advantages and disadvantages plus additional flavor (like how bludgeoning weapons dealt bonus damage to undead in Diablo). If you could trade weapon types at will, it would remove the distinctiveness of the weapon types, which cheapens the experience.

Weapons should be significant enough by themselves that if you spec on a certain one, it should be worth staying even if you find a good other weapon.
