Is the duelist a good class for beginners?
Hi, I just started playing and got stuck at the class selection screen. I'm confused about which one to choose and I read that the wrong choice could ultimately lead to many wasted hours of gameplay. I am leaning towards the duelist but don't know if it's a beginner friendly. If I choose the duelist, will I still be able to do spells? Also, what is the most friendly class? Please help, I want to start playing.

" Didnt even know you race at all. I always go ranger in races though, i think its easy using it as a first char too, considering the ranged attacks with a bunch of mixed life nodes. |

try doing the "blender" build with duelist. The blender build as duelist is the most beginner friendly build as far as I'm concerned. It uses two melee abilities, no spells and deals a crap ton of damage. It is very fun to use, and many people use it.

Don't worry about it, just start playing! Duelist is fine.
You will screw up your first character. It doesn't matter what class you pick, or how much you plan things out in advance; your first character will not be amazing. Much of the fun in Path of Exile comes from starting new characters and trying out new ideas. The purpose of your first character is to show you the ropes and get you familiar with how the game works, not to be the most perfectly min-maxed build. And yeah, you can use any spell or attack as any class if you have the required stats. Duelists won't get as many magic spells early on from quest rewards as some other classes, though. The early skill rewards you get as a Duelist are mostly melee attacks and bow attacks. If you know you want to play a spellcaster, the best options would be Witch, Templar or Shadow. |

" I think you should let the guy make his own decisions with his first char. Specific builds can come later. |

Hah if you're getting stuck at the class selection screen you're mind is going to be blown as soon as you have to actually start planning a proper build.
Class alone doesn't really mean anything in PoE aside from where you start on the skill tree. Any class can do anything, but most builds have a more efficient class starting point. I find it's best to first figure out what you want to do. Melee? Cast spells? Use a bow? Then figure out which class would be best fit for what you want in your build. This isn't going to be completely obvious at first but that's okay. Don't get too wrapped up in worrying about "wasted time". Games are supposed to be fun. Just do your own thing and you'll learn naturally. But to directly answer your question, melee is pretty good and easy early and mid game. And Duelist nodes naturally lend themselves to melee. Melee is still good late game, but it becomes a lot more gear intensive. Spellcasting can be frustrating in early game because of the lack of mana and defenses. So yes, a melee duelist is a pretty good starter build in my opinion. IGN: Smegmazoid

the way I see it, there is no class for beginners in this game.
Just pick what you like most by it looks and have fun. |

This is what I recommend for a newbie,
Go marauder and pick all of his resist passives then move on to the middle area and grab all the life nodes, then from there you should have identified what type of weapon you want to use or whether you want a shield or not, and just so happens that all those melee weapon buffs and stuff are right next to the life nodes you picked up. Or you could even switch to some kind of caster or bow user after you get all your defense nodes. Best possible scenario is for you to get your hands on a legacy facebreaker though, because then you don't really need anything but attack speed + tankiness nodes.
