Linking Steam Account Deletes Old Account?

I took a break from playing this game and wanted to come back. It asked me if I wanted to link my Steam account to my PoE account and it says if I do my old account will be deleted.

Does this mean I'd lose all my old characters? I'm hesitant to click OK and lose all the work I put in :(

Any help would be appreciated!
No, i linked my old account on Steam and all its fine.
Some people have managed to overwrite their existing account somehow when registering their account with steam...don't know how they managed it though...if you did this support can undo it.

I had that problem.
The warning was very unclear.

I played via Steam when the game was released and decided to link my Steam to my PoE account. I thought that was how it worked. I thought my Steam data (characters) would be transferred to my PoE account but it was the other way around.

Now it's been 1 week and a half and I still can't play.

Exactly what happened with me. I think I'll just give up and forget about my old character.
Hang in there guys! I had the same problem last week. Here is what happened....

Nov 1, 2013: After play a lot of hours after the official launch of PoE I decided to create a fourm account and link my steam account so I can participate in the community, make trades, etc. Went through the procedure to create an account and when I got to the part where I link my steam there was a warning about overwriting the current account. I was confused because I didn't know what account they were talking about. I never played in CB or OB so i never had the separate client to launch PoE. I just used Steam. So I ignorantly clicked ok to link my account. Of course that completely removed all my characters. Searched the fourms to see how other people handled this problem. E-mailed support and wait.

While i waited i played other games to keep me busy. I understand the backlog the support team has since the launch of the game.

Nov 6, 2013: Got an e-mail from support and all my characters are back!!!

So what did I do wrong???

I finally realized my mistake. When you register on the fourms there are 2 ways. I wish this was clearer to the new players that are comming from Steam and have played the game through steam prior to making a fourm account.

Instead of clicking the "Create account" i should have clicked the "Log in" button because on the log in screen there are 2 sides. The one where you sign in normally with your username and password and the one on the left where it just says sign in through steam. I clicked that area and it logs me into the fourms with all my characters. I didn't have to "create an account" because I had already played the game through steam and it uses that info on the fourms.

I hope my experience helps those who have the same problem to have a little bit more patients.

Cheers m8, my character was deleted in the same way 2 Days ago and I´m still waiting for an initial response from the Support team, but reading about your experience with the same problem makes me see the light at the end of the tunnel :P
I should be more clear >.<

To get the fastest fix for this problem here is what you should email. Support already has a lot of emails to go through so make sure your email has this information so they don't need another response from you to fix your account.

I think all you need is to state all the characters you had in the account. When i mailed them i have then these info.

Steam account
Stated that this was the same email I used to make the fourm account
Character name - level - league

From what i read from other players that the only vital information is the characters name. I'm positive that if you provided that then they can fix the problem without having to send another email to you and then waiting again for support to get your new email.
I mailed to support. I gave him my steam id and pathofexile.com login name.
they linked steam to my poe account.
