Avatar of fire(AoF) guide

Was so excited for this keystone...Unfortunately,the things you can do with it,are done better and easier by other skills

I like how this primer is getting all sorts of praise from the community. . .and it completely ignores the most potent part of AoF. (That, or OP just didn't figure out.)

The reason to use AoF is for critical strikes. If all of your damage is fire, then fire critical strikes get burning damage based on all of the damage used for the attack.

All this talk of damage conversion is small potatoes compared to the advantage this gives for critical strike builds.

I'm sure this looks wonderful when you think about the numbers. But this kind of build would need accuracy, crit, burn damage, physical and/or fire damage, life/ES. It feels hard enough to prioritize half those into a good build, let alone all of them.

It's not. I do it frequently, except you would probably be using armour for something like this, since one of the best options for critical strike near AoF is near Marauder, down by Blood Magic.

Which puts you near RT to. AoF builds already seems pretty tight on points but building around crits probably work to, seen some crit builds with AoF and ice spear. Will add some about crit later, actually didn't think about that.

I feel like in relation to where AoF is on the skill tree, and nearby fire damage nodes vs weapon damage nodes, that going for it is inefficient. Like your best start will be a Templar and then you'll want to head into the witch area to get more fire damage nodes. As opossed to just grabbing normal damage increases for physical melee and whatever kind of weapon you have.

Unless the potential for getting fire damage increase is more than physical damage increase, given the same amount of efficiency, I don't see the point of taking this as a melee build.

Physical damage nodes are mostly higher than the fire/elemental damage nodes. Most fire nodes are 6% with 12% or 18% notable, elemental is 10% notable, 5 and 8 nodes. Weapon elemental is 8% with 24% notable. Most physical damage is 10-12% and often has additional affect like armor or life with pretty good notables to. Galvanic hammer is one of the best nodes there is with AoF(40% increased damage). And there is the bonus from strength to. Melee/bow AoF seems to build pretty similar to phys builds except they get the advantage of burn and some elemental bonuses.

Agreed (although I'd add that there are plenty of ways to get a chance to ignite on non-critical strikes, which may be easier for your build than getting lots of crit chance and multiplier). It looks difficult get the numbers in your favour on a non-igniting build. I suppose it would be interesting to use a good physical bow and physical attack skills and still benefit fully from the Weapon Elemental Damage support gem, but even that's a bit of a stretch.
Bump, updated it a bit.
Updated some things.

If the increased elemental damage is local then I'm pretty sure it doesn't but it does if it's global.
