In game professions that are meaningfull?

So i was just thinking to myself, the game looks ok, but i can see it getting repetative after time, Who thinks the introduction of professions would add extra playability and longevity to the game?

However, it must Not be like wow. In wow, you train and train and skill up only to find the items you make are useless, no one uses them and no demand for them due to running instances to get better gear, all seasonal gear and raid gear trumps anything you can craft/forge. (i have not played wow in years correct me if im wrong)

I quite like the system of professions that runescape has, were you can only buy low end gear from shops, everything else is crafted by players, so there is a real incentive to focus alot of your time in mining and smithing for example. I would remember that quite a few characters were more focused on higher mining/crafting/cooking levels than their actual combat or fighting levels, as there was money to be made, and that increasing your combat level was directly related to how good your armour was and how many lobsters you had. Ie: you relied on other players professions to help your character level up.

It gives another avenue to go down, increases the playability of the game and stops you from getting bored with hack and slash. Getting tired of squashing bugs? you can go bake a cake or do some fishing or hammer out some new armour for yourself.

Thoughts?

My opinion is that adding professions, or any kind of player-based crafting, would steer PoE away from what it's meant to be (hack-and-slash ARPG) and more towards being a generic MMO.

I actually agree this would lengthen the playability of the game by far. An alchemist can make invisibility potions, damage reduction, igniting potions that increase fire damage done. A blacksmith can create reinforcements for armor to make it stronger, give more stats and so on. This is my opinion, I think it should be in the game.

I would just prefer that certain classes get a type of thing they can do I.E. a witch can brew all kinds of potions that either benefit the party or are a detriment to the enemy's, and the murader would have a specialty in weapon benefits and stuff along those lines. Or better yet, just have a passive tree line that is neutral and allows you to have larger benefits from the object changing things. I like the second option better personally.

"Look at it this way: The longer it takes before you get your key or the game goes to open beta, the better the game will be when you finally get to play!"

quote from Garr0t

If there are professions, they should only create consumable items like potions, scrolls, charged wands, and so on.
But that just steers it away from the old school loot finding gameplay, that PoE is based on...

And encase you guys didn't know, you can find special flasks too.

It does stray away from what the developers were aiming for, although it will lengthen the time spent on the game. I still don't think its a good idea because PoE is supposed to be a hack ans slash looting kind of game which is still enyjoyable, and there is still many hours of gameplay even without a profession type system.
There should be something though, much like the Horadric cube recipes. Just to add another element to the game.

IF there should be something, it should be something GGG can think about after they finish developing more of the game.
I don't see any benefits from trying to add something like this to the game anytime soon, as there is MUCH more things that require higher attention.
