Random Disconnects
|
I realize this is a known issue, but most replies from GGG have asked people to make their own threads.
In my case, the disconnects happen spaced as little as a few minutes apart, or as wide as about an hour apart. Since I'm not disconnecting every couple seconds, I doubt these numbers can be correct. Also, I ran pingtest.net to various servers all over the US, and the results were always 0% packet loss. Are you on a wireless connection?
I ask because your first hop is really bad. | [REDACTED] - 15 | 220 | 188 | 6 | 44 | 2612 | 10 | You're showing a 15% packet loss, and max ping time of over two and a half seconds. The results are accurate.. keep in mind that this is a loss in ICMP packets. TCP and other protocols have "retry" measures to retransmit failed packets (at a cost). If you are using a wireless connection, I recommend changing the channel on the wireless signal as well as a possible re-location of your router into a more accessible place. If you had x-ray vision and were looking from your PC to the router, you want to be looking "through" as few obstacles as possible (tables, desks, walls, cabinets, etc). |

Yea as I mentioned in my first post, that first hop is part of what make me suspect that the program isn't properly detecting stuff for whatever reason.
I am on a wired connection directly to my brand new Netgear CG3000D gateway. Forgot to add, after a disconnect I get the error "unable to connect to login server" for a few seconds before I am able to log back in. Other programs using the internet such as skype experienced no interruption during these events. Last edited by Dolmur#3850 on Oct 28, 2013, 6:00:49 PM

" If you're on a wired connection and getting ping times like that, then you either have a problem with the cable, or a problem with the ethernet card. There's no reason you should be getting that high of latency through a wired connection. WinMTR just does ICMP packets like a normal ping or otherwise. It doesn't really do anything that would be affected by other software as it is a direct network layer thing. You can try PingPlotter for a comparison if you'd like.. run them both at the same time.. see how their results match up. That should hopefully either confirm a problem, or show if WinMTR is having issues. |

Ran a bunch of tests all evening. I got similar results to what I posted above running WinMTR from a different computer over a different ethernet cord, so I think that rules out the cable or my ethernet card.
I was disconnecting a little less often tonight, more like half hour intervals usually. I had my ping graph up the whole time though and was seeing a lot of ping spikes on a very regular basis (about once every 5-10 seconds on average). I also tried PingPlotter and saw results about 30% better across the board, but that still means I was seeing like 10% packet loss to my router. |

" If you're getting that sort of loss on multiple PCs connected to the router, then I'm guessing there is a configuration issue with the router itself. Do you have the latest firmware for it, and have you checked all the QoS and Firewall settings for it? |
|

I do have the latest firmware, not sure about those other settings yet.
I ran some other tests because I was noticing irregularities depending on the destination I was pinging. Using cmdline ping, WinMTR, and PingPlotter for about 500 reps each I had 0%, 0%, and 1% packet loss respectively when targeting 192.168.0.1. No idea why packet loss is showing up there when I ping destinations further away, but there you have it... Thanks for the help Drakier, I appreciate it! |
