Sword and shield duelist

How well does this combination work currently I'm using a 2 handed axe and I'm planning on trying a new build when Passives* get reset

I hope this reset doesn't result in an Exodus....
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
I have a sword and shield duelist in Legacy and he is doing pretty well now on low lvl maps. I had to update him as I went along to make it work but it does work. I am thinking about trying a duel wielding next time since the extra damage might be nice as opposed to the defense of a shield which can be covered by other equipment/endurance charges.

My duelist uses double strike with a good fancy foil. The attack speed helps a lot.

Imo sword + shield duelist is rather bad. Better go with mace or axe and get good nodes from maras area. I've made one once and he really sucked compared to my other chars. I'd rather go with sword + shield as a ranger.
How about this build?

Decent tank spec.

120% inc. health
180% inc. armor
88% inc. evasion
8% more shield block
130% inc. melee damage with swords
30% more cold damage with weapons
30% less mana cost of skills
+12%(?) movement speed from no armor debuff.

Pretty straight forward smack'em build. Should do okay with most physical attack skills. And pretty configurable, if you want to take iron reflexes, lessen the DR for more health/resists etc.

More life, less armor/eva. Drop the cold dmg thing unless you are going with an elemental build, if you are getting it just because you run hatred it's a wasted point. Get the MS reduce passive only when you are settled into your end game gear (or close to). If you go hybrid or eva gear that node isn't worth it. Wearing a shield and armor chest then go w/ the ignore reduced MS passive.

To OP, in terms of PVE, I've seen very little need for a shield. The dmg loss from it is massive and the EHP gained is minimal. Now for PVP...

Could've removed 88 % armor and evasion for 28% more health, but in my opinion mitigation and avoidance is better than just stacking the pool. With such high increases to armor evasion, it's easy to get 1000/1000 out of a fairly average Dragonscale.

Also, I find that the extra 30% cold damage helps a lot with crowd control, and makes mobs slower/less likely to hit me back. If you don't have any cold mods/auras/skills, of course you put it somewhere else.

I don't agree with the last point either. Since melee characters who don't stack any mana or regen passives get a very small pool. Having 30% cheaper spells is very nice to keep from quaffing pots every two hits while levelling. At least if you find an early 4 link.

I feel that with the high evasion percentage and decent block rate, incoming damage is fairly low. Especially with the decent armor reduction.
