In my experience, texture quality won't affect FPS "that" much unless you have a low amount of video RAM available, or using an IGP that uses system RAM as video RAM.

I can't recall for sure, but I would imagine Medium textures to run fine on 256MB of video memory. If you want to know exact numbers on how much video memory is in-use by any game; MSI Afterburner has a nice on-screen display module that shows it.

I've seen only a few games actually pass 512MB of video memory usage. 1GB of video memory should be plenty (unless running at crazy resolutions; 1080p+ is "crazy" :p). In my experience, hitting the video memory cap will drop FPS, but keep it consistent (if you had 60 FPS consistently, you'd go to 30 FPS, and stay around 30FPS). Only way to really know is via a memory monitoring tool, such as MSI Afterburner, or even GPU-Z.
