Gnarled Branch

I was just wondering why this is actually in the game, it being a 2H staff and all that cannot to my knowledge get 6 sockets. It also only boolsters a 12% block chance. Is there supposed to be some sort of defining property about this weapon that I am unaware of?

It's a low level white item type. That's it.

And while we're at it...what's the deal with Shabby Jerkin? That thing SUCKS! Why doesn't GGG care about Path of Exile? If I see another Shabby Jerkin again I'm QUITTING!

(OP your question is fine and was asked in a reasonable manner, this sarcasm is not directed at you)

The gnarled branch is the lowest level item of its type. It's not meant to have anything good or especial about it - that's what upgrades are for. If you find one in a lvl 50+ area it can roll 6 sockets, but by then there will be far better staff options to use.

Technically, any high level (76+) gnarled branch can be godly if you're looking for a spellcaster staff, since the physical damage is irrelevent. An ilvl 79 gnarled branch can roll any mod in the game, and can also be 6S/6L. Example: It's entirely possible to roll a 6L Gnarled Staff with the following stats:

100+ Spell damage
90+ Mana
22% Cast Speed
100+ Spell Crit

And still have 1 suffix left for crit mult, elemental % damage, mana regen, etc.

If you are looking for a physical staff, then you obviously want a higher base lvl staff.

Gnarled Branch cannot actually roll 6 sockets, despite being ilvl50+ and being a 2h weapon.

I didn't know that. Do you have a source? Does this apply to any other items?

are you sure about this? i thought any chest or 2-hand weapon of ilvl 50+ could roll 6S...Source?

I call bullshit. If you can 6L a level 50+ plate vest, there is no logical reason why you shouldn't be able to 6L a level 50+ gnarled staff. Unless pneuma can link something to back up his claim, consider his post incorrect.

Gnarled Branch takes up a 1x4 slot in your inventory.
I'm curious as to how either of you would expect 6 sockets to fit in that.

It doesn't apply to other items in general. Gnarled branch is a bit special.

So kind. I've only played the game for fucking ever, and I remember when this change was made.
