How to make crit weakness perform

On a monster you won't overkill with a crit (probably bosses only?) cw provides a 120% DPS boost for you.

That is, you're doing 220% of tooltip DPS by applying CW on a high-health target. Trouble is RNG is too much of a factor when your crit chance is so low and overkill will be nuts with that high of a multiplier. It won't be any good on trash.

Math is provided in spoiler tag at the bottom of first post.

A quick rundown of the evasion effect on PW:
A level 63 monster has about 3600 evasion rating.
Level 17 PW is a 62% evasion penalty
Cursed monster has about 3600*(1-.62) = 1368 evasion rating.
If you had 90% CTH previously, that corresponds to about 2100 accuracy rating.
After projectile weakness, you have 95% chance to hit.
crit probability @ 90% with no curse: 0.9^2*0.15 = 12.15%
With CW +9%, 0.9^2*(0.15 + 0.09) = 19.4%
crit probability @ 95% with PW: 0.95^2*0.15 = 13.5%

PW is better because it fits the situation, not because it actually provides superior DPS. It's just more dependable, and useful in all situations. CW only works against a boss if your mult is that high.

I tried to look only at crit damage on bosses and tanky yellows since they are the only one that can survive one crit. I don't really care about crit chance because I use diamond flask against them. It looked like my crits weren't really much more powerful with CW so I concluded it wasn't worth the accuracy loss. But I couldn't really tell because I hadn't many situations to test this, so it could be only luck.

It's roughly 75% bonus damage for CW against 45% bonus for PW, so it's only 20% damage bonus from PW to CW with 100% crit chance (ignoring accuracy). 20% is hard to notice when you have different ennemies and high damage range. If I can gather enough motivation, I'll try testing on Oversoul.

As you said, PW is more reliable overall, especially when you have only 1.5 second to score a crit. The 20% more damage isn't much when you consider that I have the best conditions to use the curse. If the benefits are so small for me, this curse is useless for anyone else.

This seems to be the common belief. But I have an idea, which I've tried to convey with all this math. I guess math just won't do, and I'll have to post a video up. Still need a staff and armour suitable for 5-linking before I can hope to demo.

I haven't looked much at your maths. Myself, the easy conclusion I've reached is the following one : The curse is the best for your dps when you have the lowest crit chance and the highest crit multiplier. If your idea consists in something else, I'd like to hear it.

I don't think crit weakness is weak at all, the numbers seem pretty powerful for a crit-focused build.
The problem is, almost every crit-focused build I've made does primarily elemental damage, and elemental weakness is far and away the best curse in the game for damage.

For a monster with 75% resist, elemental weakness triples the elemental damage that monster will take.
So until critical weakness starts tripling DPS, elemental weakness will be preferred, by me at least.

The other thing is that it only helps when you crit. Given the fact that a crit build landing a crit is already going to 1-shot the majority of monsters, this will only really help with high-HP enemies.

Not really since it adds some crit chance.
