How do you plan your builds?

Spellcaster or physical?

i take it you've never played EK?
I pick a skill and make it work.
Once a concept of build gets in my mind, I open a .txt and then:

1) Pick necessary uniques. (if any)
2) Pick main skill.
3) Pick supports.
4) Open the skilltree planner and, on a budget of around 65 points and assuming near lvl53:
4.1) Select character.
4.2) Pick necessary keystones.
4.3) Pick damage/life/defence nodes until I spend all the points.
4.4) Optimize it a bit.
5) Calculate "naked" stats, since I don't know which gear will end up using.
6) Let it rot in the folder, because I don't play much. :D
I generally take a skill, decide if I want to go CI or HP, then think of the end game mana costs. If there's a high mana cost I might go for blood magic unless I want to run Arctic Armour or some shit, in which case I'll go for EB. Depending on these things, I pick the class closest to these passives and map out at least 200% HP or a similar amount of ES on the skill tree. Once I do that I take whatever DPS nodes I can as well as any nearby nodes of note. I generally like to take a couple diamond skin nodes for resistances and I almost always get unwavering stance + IR if possible. Sometimes I end up needing a couple 30 stat nodes for gems, so I take those when needed.

Plan my builds?? What's dat? LOL! I just pick witch, go "hmmm... she needs a bow and some undead friends" then pick all the appropriate fun stuff from the passive tree; no fuss no muss...

Even from CB, never "planned" anything out. Just made something that looked like fun to do and then pick the most appropriate passives that go with what i'm doing. And if i don't like it, i just kill it and make another.

and this is why you dont have any char above 80.
try planning your build and you dont hit a wall latr on.

Please. All you need to know is basic mechanics and a general feel for effective passives and item mods. No need to use planners or spreadsheets or any of that.
It may be the same thing cause I didnt search that hard on your link but I use this to plan me builds.

works very well for imo
this is how I plan it

Rules to follow:

1. Melee or Bow or Spell or Traps or totems?
2. HP or CI (if spell, Shavronne's).
3. physical or spell or elemental or both?
4. Crit or resolute technique (if melee or bow)
5. life or ci or not at least get 200% ci or HP nodes
6. if aoe, go for carcass jack, if life and hp, plan for kaoms.
7. if EB, ES/armor, ES/Evasion, or ES gear depending on how much mana you have to at least run 7 auras.
8. if EB, Innerforce
9. if CI, no need for chaos resist gears, but have to be picky on which auras to use.
10. which uniques to use, which gems, which supports (are the sockets not offcolor or not, 2/6 is possible but 1/6 and 0/6 offsets are highly unrealistic.

just some of rules i follow.

Usually starts with some kind of inspiration involving a gem + gem combo, an interaction been a gem + unique or something of the sort, then I spend 2-3 hours optimizing a skill tree, choosing what starting class, keystones, nodes and how to get to everything, and when/what transitions I will need to make as I level the character, then I determine what uniques I will be needed/wanting and if there is anything I should save/craft/buy for that character if it's in a league that I already have money in. Then I spend about five minutes thinking of an interesting name. Usually takes 3-5 hours overall depending on the complexity of the build and how well I know the complicated mechanics involved, usually takes longer if I need to research/test something out. xD
