In fact I'd advise against item farming and only using the drops you find along the way as you progress (some increased quantity and rarity help). Otherwise your char will drastically over-level the content, negatively effecting your exp and currency drops.

The player also suffers a penalty to XP if they are too far above or below the monster's level. There is a safe level range where no penalty is applied, which is equal to three, plus one for every sixteen complete player levels. Thanks gjrud, the XP/currency penalties in the "mechanics" thread is what I was alluding to.

I noticed even just progressing if you full-clear you tend to over-level the content, so managing your char lev vs. monster lev by rushing through some areas (phase run FTW) is needed as well.

Yer welcome. Yah, quantity >> rarity (though having both is good). Check out the mechanics thread (linked above and I'm gunna put it in my signature) for exact details on magic find. Rarity only effects the chance an item that has already dropped will be magic/rare/unique. Quantity increases the chance SOMETHING will drop (get more loot).

Quantity is the only thing that helps you get more of the following:
* Currency
* MAPS
* Gems

Although if a map does drop, increased rarity will effect the chance for it to be magic/rare/unique. Currency and gems can only be normal items so rarity is useless for them.
