This RPG label
RPG is an acronym for Role Playing Game, and was traditionally applied to games such as Dungeons & Dragons (always with an ampersand).
If I make no choices (other than stats/gear) and have no influence on plot, it isn't an RPG. It isn't just GGG, the entire world seems to have forgotten what this acronym actually means. The closest we get in PoE is bandit quests, but even then the only different outcomes are stat based and do not influence story direction. Just ignore this, I'm only ranting. |

Rant away. Doesn't bother me.
Whatever you think it should be called, it will still be known as an ARPG. Just like SUV's are really 4 wheel drive station wagons. |

" But SUV was a label created for that type of vehicle, no? RPG has a previously established meaning. A meaning which does not apply to a large number of "RPG" games. |

There is character development, you gain persistent levels, assign your own skill points in a very complex system, and gain better equipment. And although the storyline is linear; it's still playing you through a role. Though, the main point I have to make is, you are saying the game is an RPG, which it barely is, it's an Action RPG. ARPGs, like Diablo, Diablo 2, and The Legend of Zelda, are mainly combat action and adventuring to gain power and defeat enemies. They very rarely stray into the underlying story, except in short cut-scenes or scripted sequences. Sometimes they have cool puzzles and mechanics, like in PoE, you can combine support skills to find novel ways to destroy your foes.
The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Deus Ex, or KotOR might be more your style if you want to have more choice in action, and have consequences to the storyline. Last edited by ionface#0613 on Jun 27, 2013, 11:49:54 PM

I'm happy playing PoE.
I just think it's a hack'n'slash, not an rpg. In Street Fighter I can pick my character and choose abilities, SF is not an RPG. |

Yeah it's hack'n'slash, dungeon crawler, action game with character development. I guess character development being considered integral part of RPG experience, it started to get slapped on everything, 'FPS with RPG elements' etc... which has nothing to do with RP part at all but just customization/development. RPG label is indeed slapped onto too many things nowadays.

i would like to point out that even D&D has pre-determined worlds/skills/ect. there is only so much you can do to effect the outcome. granted there is far more flexibility/possibilities with D&D but id say that you roll play with your chars in MMORPG/ARPG, just not to the same degree. i defiantly have a sense of personality with my chars (based on skill tree/weapon type/armor type/ect).
Hey this is a signature! pretty cool stuff...yeah... Last edited by websterep#3546 on Jun 28, 2013, 11:04:54 AM

" But in D&D I can make a choice to go hunt dragons in the mountains, or go to the tavern for an ale. I can backstab or ally as I see fit. I can choose to cast my fireball not at the goblins, but at the trees around them for alternate effect. I am restricted only by my imagination and the restrictions imposed by the DM. This is what makes an RPG, decisions that effect story/plot. " Thank you. |

"By that definition, almost all of the early JRPGs — hell, almost all JRPGs period — aren't RPGs at all. Only a small handful (Chrono Trigger) would qualify. This "bad definition" thing isn't new. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. " actually you r right. POE doesnt feel fully like RPG, even though it got the action. From the playing so far, i feel its more like an arcade game. But we cant change the fact that GGG spins it as an ARPG. Perm. Retired from this unforgiving land of the Exiles.
