Although not class-wise:

Minion Build.

Totemic Build.

Attack Speed Bow Build.

Spell Build.

Given that this is an ARPG, not an MMO, you can solo with any class, and several builds within each. Logically, ranged classes are fine for relatively easy play: archers (ranger, templar, shadow all work nicely there) and spellcasters (witch, templar and shadow) are the prime culprits here. Right now, summoners are considered a bit lame but there's a large minion AI overhaul due soon, so that may change.

For sure survivability, the Marauder is hard to pass up: he gets a lot of life nodes near his starting position, damage increases and generally ends up being the very tank he appears to be. He's a popular choice for hardcore races.

In my experience, Duelist and Shadow are the two 'hardest' classes to start with, but if you have twink gear, either can rock the early game and onwards. Shadow, in particular, is flimsy and has trouble finding focus early on.
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.

There are so many different ways you can go with each class, it doesn't matter which one you choose. Choose which one you like..
I got to level 71 in the 2 Week Hardcore league with a Marauder.

Just a boring run of the mill strength, mace, shield, and blood magic Marauder.

I did it all solo.

You can still get killed very, very easily but if you are playing solo and hardcore you have a decent chance of making it through a lag spike or a disconnect.

But as someone else pointed out you can solo any class with the right effort.
I've tried all of the classes, running mostly class-typical builds.

Witch: Ended up with great damage and eshield; but overall too squishy for my playstyle.

Shadow: Squishiness of a witch combined with claws didn't work at all for me.

Ranger: Worked pretty damned well. The arrows had a good blend of single-target and area hits; and enough range to run away from anything big.

Duellist: It was something. Dual swords wasn't half bad. Those spiked shields are actually really nice.

Templar: Health tank + eshield. Made a hell of a tank but came out lacking in DPS.

Marauder: Stand still. Click on boss. Hold key down until boss dies. Great tank. Good DPS with a two-hander.

Of course, I was trying to play every class with the 'stand in one place and beat the enemy to death' style... Which I consider 'easy'. For that (And, I suppose, for most people), Marauder was the easiest.
There was a time when my two-handed-sword-wielding-blood-magicked-200+-in-all-stats-15%-base-critical-chance-before-critical-weakness-curse-acrobatics-Shadow could solo groups of enemies with cleave and frenzy charged flicker strike spam. Now I pretty much group with him because I'm doing terribly, even with a decent amount of dodge and several instant life recovery potions.

Lag is a pretty big deal. I've been noticing much worse performance on the default league compared to hardcore. I reccomend starting in hardcore and continuing to play in default if you die.

I think Shadow could use some work. My bulid isn't exactly... great... yet, but I'm having quite the trouble at hard hitting foes while being a melee character. I just can't get enough lifesteal. If I spend too much in +life I'm going to have the same DPS as your standard Marauder, which kind of defeats the purpose of playing the Shadow.

The easiest solo build is ice spear totem witch/templar.

At least, that's my opinion. Get a ton of mana (because these totems are costly), get some decent strength and energy shield, lay down some ice spear multiple-projectile totems, and watch as you decimate everything in front of you while you run around like a chicken with your head caught off.

My Marauder started to use totems more and more as I leveled higher and higher. I only had 3,600 life at level 71 and that can disappear instantly if not careful.

So no matter what a solo player should probably consider totems a very, very useful tool.

Explode Corpse + Totem is almost mandatory. And Decoy became more and more useful.

I put 95% of my passive points into defensive skills (life, shield, armor) and even so I would melt away like butter if not careful.

I wish I would have started working on totems earlier but I didn't realize how much I might need them later.
