How can i lower my ping?
So as the title says, is there any way to lower my ping? Most of the time i have 150ms with spikes up to 500 (which makes desync). I have cable connection, with low ping to my area sites (around 27ms while pinging, 49ms to google.com (173.194.70.139)). From my experience from other games, to have 150ms delay I would have to connect to France or Spain (I live in Poland close to German border). Is there any way to do some tweaking (already done the TCPAckFrequency one)? I dont know if the problem lies in distance between me and servers, or if my ISP is routing packets through Australia or something, so if there is anything I/you could do it would be awesome.

Hey there Flop,
Can you please run a trace route the next time you encounter this problem? This will allow us to see exactly where the connection is failing and where it is being routed. As you live in Poland, which gateway are you using? For a guide on running a trace route, please see this thread here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/361292 |

Contrary to popular belief, latency/ping rarely has much effect on desync. While it can be tied in some situations, you generally either get desync or you don't, and latency doesn't play much of a factor in this until you get up to seriously higher latency.
desync is a problem of the server. When the server calculates your position in a different place than the client thinks it is, that is when you get a desync. This is more commonly due to certain abilities, or ways of playing. Movement abilities (like Cyclone) can cause more desync than others. Also if you run around obstacles a lot or between large packs of monsters within a narrow space, this can also cause desyncs. It is the case where the server thinks your character is doing something different than the local client thinks. In the case of many monsters and a narrow space, your client might think you made it through the narrow space properly, but the server calculated the monster positions slightly differently and your character was not able to get through the gap. In these cases, the server will keep you on one side of the gap/bridge while your client thinks you got through and will let you keep running..... until it catches up or you die. There's not much wrong with your ping times as you've stated them. A WinMTR run would give a little more insight into this. If you want to run a WinMTR and post the results, someone can take a look and see if they can see anything wrong. Otherwise, your best bet is to change up how you play or just go a little more slowly until they can fix the server problems that cause desync. |

I'm using Europe gateway. Here is the trace route as you requested. by the way thanks for responding so fast :)

I'm going to assume you're on a wireless connection based on the packet loss I'm seeing. Packet loss in this game is a very bad thing. I'd say it's actually worse than having bad latency.
In addition to your packet loss (presumably to a wireless connection) I see this line: | ffm-bb2-link.telia.net - 4 | 102 | 98 | 1 | 85 | 1890 | 58 | This shows an almost 2 second ping time, and it's within a couple of hops from your router. That's not good either. Then there is: | ffm-b12-link.telia.net - 8 | 90 | 83 | 0 | 99 | 3154 | 2 | this is a 3 second ping. Bottom line, use a wired connection. See if it improves your WinMTR results. If so, I'd play with that. If not, then you need to probably contact your ISP or someone associated with your network and figure out what is going on that is causing the large latency and packet loss. |

" Thank you for posting this. Are you using a wireless connection by any chance? "| 192.168.1.1 - 1 | 118 | 117 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 |" 1% packet loss between your computer and your modem/router isn't a major issue, but it can cause issues. Here is the main problem: | ffm-bb2-link.telia.net - 4 | 102 | 98 | 1 | 85 | 1890 | 58 | | hbg-b1-link.telia.net - 13 | 82 | 72 | 0 | 85 | 415 | 28 | | poz-r2.tpnet.pl - 11 | 86 | 77 | 0 | 91 | 338 | 64 | Excessive packet loss and latency spikes occurring before our servers/network. It is possible that this is due to your issue between your PC and modem, though it is also likely that it is an ISP issue. |

I can see why you think I'm on wireless connection, but actually I'm not. I think my cable is damaged (or maybe switch, as it goes through it to the router). The loss is minimal but I guess its something to consider. I'll try to run 1000 pings to my router and post results in few minutes (maybe its not my fault after all). Also, I was using skype while doing the test(audio only), maybe that made the results slightly false?
| |
" That shouldn't affect the results. Though I'd recommend running another trace without skype running. But the main thing is, you need to have the trace running while playing and experiencing the lag. As you're on a cable, it's possible the cable is damaged or the router is, if you have any other hardware to test with I'd recommend giving that a try before replacing anything. |

I guess the first thing I have to do is to fix the loss. I've run the test again without skype and it was even worse - 4s ping on all the host except the last. I'll make a thread if the problems exists after fixing that, as for now thank you very much for your time :). I guess I have to play carefully for now :)

" You're most welcome! Ah yes, definitely something going on there then. Let us know how you get on either way :) |
