Visual Lag with any explosions, FPS drops from 60 (vsync) to 5

I know this is an issue that already exists.

My AMD vision control center thing has everything listed as 'use applicatoin settings', and changing shadows/etc does not change anything.

I even put everything on highest, it runs perfectly fine with the exception of when i use a skill such as discharge, and it causes the 'explosion' effect. This then causes the fps to drop for a spike to under 10

Does anyone have any possible solutions at all? Would be happy to try any solutions people can suggest, and see if they work.

In general my PC is an AMD Radeon 7850 HD, with a AMD 4170 quad core 4.2ghz processor, 16gb 64bit ram (i think its 1066or 833, can't remember), running on a SSD hdd, so I don't believe in any way my PC should be holding me back

Edit, clarification: The lag spikes, if the enemy dies are NOT existent (on highest possible graphics settings), but hte second that a discharge does NOT kill someone I get hte spike

this just happened to me in docks :I
cant play this game anymore. its so much fun but when you die to stuf you have 0 control over it gets frustrating
^

No advise on how to improve performance so you don't have those spikes down to 0 fps (as shown by dave's pic which I am stealing fo the main post
It's a common ATi/AMD GPU issue from this game. There's even cases that one guy used a Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition and it still causes nasty issues.

I'm surprised I don't have that many severe issues on my mobility GPU from ATi.
No one has any tweaks at all to improve this? It has been a problem since CB
To make things short - I have the same issue, I put tens of hours into investigation and no, there is no magic trick to fix this.

What helped at least a bit:

--nosound option does wonders, try that first
-gc2 option seem to help with mem-related crashes but should not hurt anyway

(just to clarify - under Windows, create a shortcut to Client.exe and put those two options in the Command arguments section)

What also helped:

-Move the ggpk file from HDD to USB flash drive (using mklink.exe but this is for longer explanation)

-Increase process priority (Task manager -> Client.exe process raise priority to High)

-Fiddling with Ati CCC and driver versions (I have tried many version, even older ones and surprisingly, 12.4 seem to be the most stable one for me)

-Switching off Windows Page file or setting it to fixed size and defragging HDD afterwards

-Turn off HDD indexing service(! this seem odd but actually helped alot)
The game can't handle 6 players doing maps, this is a serious problem.

Hey there,

The steps aldorus posted may help, along with lowering graphics options.
However things won't be as crisp and perfect as you'd expect, as there are issues with effects in parties and fps drops like this, which are currently being addressed as best as possible, however changes like this take time but will eventually be made.
We're definitely not ignoring the issue that a lot of players are having with performance.

Please don't go around this section saying stuff like this.
This section is here to offer help/tips to improve/fix issues.

Feel free to provide feedback about the game and its performance here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-forum/307

Cheers
I hope a fix for Discharge comes up soon. Everyone I know hates playing with me now. I don't lag locally but others complain to much. The skill should say on it for solo play only. I wish I didn't spend 50 regrets to use this skill.

way to necro a long dead thread......................

So...that discharge GFX lag isn't fixed in 1.5 years, despite then sorting out the preloading that was causing most of the other stuff...take a wild guess as to why...so many damn effects on screen and it doesn't matter what game it is, if something like that is spammed like discharge can be the FPS WILL drop
