Cebrux's Spin 2 Win Guide for Beginners (Resolute Technique Cyclone)

6/15 THIS GUIDE IS UNDERGOING SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. They will hopefully be posted later today!

Hi fellow gamers, my name is Cebrux, and I play the greatest build in the world:

The Spin 2 Win Duelist: EXTREME PVE MAN MODE EDITION

This guide is geared towards a Beginner audience, and I have included plenty of pictures and a step by step Passive guide for each Act. If you are new to PoE, then this guide is for you!

Why I like Spin 2 Win

While being a very straightforward style of play, it's very rewarding when you can pretend to be a life size wood chipper as you teach Wraeclast a lesson in man mode.

I have a level 66 Duelist that I really enjoy playing - and I would like to share what my experience so far has taught me. This guide will be changing as the game is patched, or as I discover better ways to go about this build as I level.

You can watch my stream for this build in action.

Now, for the Pros and Cons of this build.

PROS

- Easy and fun. Any Link, Garen or Diablo WW Barb fan will feel like they can play PoE and still be a man about it.

- Strong AoE damage. While there are plenty of other options for AoE (like Cleave), Cyclone allows you to move AND attack at the same. Who said men can't multi task?

- You can use any melee weapon(s) for this build. I prefer a 2H Axe above all else, but if your Armor isn't very high (you need 60% physical reduction minumum with no endurance charges) feel free to use a 1h with a good duelist shield (Armor + Evasion). Maces work nicely as well, bringing added stuns and stun duration to your build. Swords work too, although you wont put the additional accuracy to good use because of Resolute Technique.

- This build is Tanky. You can take a fair amount of punishment even with a 2H weapon. The ideal End Game build is to have capped resistances and 70%+ physical damage reduction. Endurance charges help you achieve this until you can get gear that has high resistances.

- You stack a lot of Strength. Strength is the best core stat IMO, and this build gets a good amount of it. You gain a great offensive stat from Strength (+Physical Damage) along with a great defensive stat (+HP).

CONS

- This build doesn't kick in for a while. You will have to suffer with a less manly Cleave until you get some levels. Good things come to those who wait.

- No ranged attacks. This actually isn't too bad when you realize that you can Leap Slam at the speed of light.

- Requires 4 Blood Magic support gems. The good news is you don't need these until later in the game, however the Duelist isn't rewarded one from a quest until Act 3 Merciless.

- Hardcore league with this build is very scary, especially with PoE still having server lag spikes and Cyclone/Leap Slam de-syncing a lot. But you are a real Man, right? Standard or Anarchy league all the way. If you get mad that you tried this build in Hardcore and died, I will reply with NOT ENOUGH SPIN.

- Chaos damage is your bane, as with any non Chaos Inoculation build. There are good Cyclone/Chaos Inoculation/Energy Shield builds out there that are capable of different things (Claws, Crits with Cold Damage) and potentially more DPS. The tradeoff for delving into the Shadow Passive tree is you lose out on a lot of Tanky stats, something that I do not prefer. It's personal preference.

Keystones
Spoiler

Passive Tree builds are an straightforward concept: Locate the Keystones (the Large and "Game Changing" Passives) you want, and figure out how to get there via smaller nodes that help you out.

Below are the 2 Keystones for this build, in the order you should seek them out.

Iron Reflexes
Converts all Evasion Rating to Armor.

This is needed early on to grant you enough Armor to tank damage. Note that you still have the base 5% chance to evade a projectile or physical melee attack.

Resolute Technique
Your hits can't be Evaded
Never deal Critical Strikes

Basically you trade the ability to Crit for a 100% chance to hit.

End Game, your Cyclone will be supported by a Blood Magic Gem (the skill costs HP instead of Mana to cast) and that means a missed attack translates into no Life Leech and no Life Gain at all. Without this Keystone, you will be losing HP for no reason whenever you miss with an attack.

Skill Gems While Leveling
Spoiler

The following gems are invaluable to getting your character high enough level to transition into an End Game build.

Cleave: I know I promised you guys that you would be Spinning, but unfortunately for us, Cyclone requires level 24, so we make do with 1/3 of a spin in the form of Cleave.

Keep the Cleave gem that you start with as a Duelist, you will need it for your main source of damage, until Act 3 normal when you get Cyclone.

Always use your Quicksilver Flask with Cyclone for a spinning speedy delivery!

Cyclone: Undeniably the manliest skill in existence. It becomes your main skill at level 24.

This skill, as manly as it is, can seem glitchy around objects and walls. In fact, many objects cancel your Spin if you direct cyclone into them, so be careful Cycloning in the forest or dungeons. This gem is given as a quest reward from Act 3 Normal "Lost in Love".

Putting Cyclone in a 5L or 6L (5 or 6 linked socket gear) is a huge priority.

If you are unfamiliar with Cyclone, the following post is a good start:

http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/251424

Also I will be updating this guide very soon with a video link demonstrating the mechanics of Cyclone, and how to properly use them.

Support Gems in order of importance: Life Leech (Life Gain on Hit if you are below level 31), Concentrated Effect, Melee Physical Damage, and the final support gem: Faster Attacks or Added Cold Damage or Life Gain on Hit, I am currently testing all of these.

Grace: Possibly the manliest part of this build. What champ doesn't want to appear graceful as he mows down fields of skeletons? The point of this Aura is to convert the Evasion it provides into Armor with Iron Reflexes.

A nice amount of Armor for a small amount of HP reserved. This gem is given as a quest reward from Act 1 Cruel "Enemy at the Gate".

There is no need to support this skill with anything other than Reduced Mana.

Leap Slam: Amazing utility skill, used for initiating an AoE fight, or for getting out of dangerous situations, or for traveling. Mostly it is used for showing off your Manly demeanor. After you support this skill with a Faster Attacks gem, it becomes Instant Transmission and your hair turns yellow. This gem is given as a quest reward from Act 1 Normal "The Caged Brute".

Support Gems in order of importance: Faster Attacks, Stun, Melee Physical Damage.

Warlord's Mark: The manliest curse in PoE, providing you with everything you could want. Life Leech, increased Flask charging etc.

Punishment is an interesting alternative curse, which I will be testing out once I get more Life Leech from my gear: If you run with a friend who does a Lightning/Shocker build, It has amazing synergy with the Punishment curse. Punishment also has some PvP potential as well VS a physical DPS class that has very low Armor.

Punishment has 2 big drawbacks however; the damage it reflects is only physical (it cannot reflect elemental or chaos), and the damage it deals to monsters is reduced by both your Armor AND their Armor. This results in low DPS (hence why Shock stacks quickly make this curse viable), however the gem actually does decent damage when leveled and +20 quality. If you aren't lacking in defenses at all, go ahead and try this curse out!

Anyways, Warlord's Mark is given as a quest reward from Act 2 Normal "Intruders in Black" and Act 3 Normal "Lost in Love".

There is no real need to support this skill, but you can use Increased Duration or Increased Area of Effect.

Enduring Cry: BEST CRY EVER. Used for building quick Endurance Charges, along with peeling monsters off of weaker allies with the taunt effect. This gem is given as a quest reward from Act 2 Normal "Intruders in Black" and Act 3 Normal "Lost in Love".

You can support it with a Faster Cast gem or Knockback gem if you wish.

Gear
Spoiler

Itemizing your character is very important in PoE, and the Spin 2 Win build requires that you stack certain stats in order to do your job effectively. These are generally listed in order of importance.

Main Stats for Weapon:
A 2H with at least 4L (4 Linked Sockets). Axes provide the most damage on average, but a sword/mace is fine.
+Physical Damage
+Life Leech
+Life Gain on Hit
+Elemental Damage of any kind

Main Stats for Armor:
+HP
+Life Leech
+Strength
+Resists
A lot of Armor and Evasion
+Life Gain on Hit
+Movement Speed (it is very important that your boots have this)

Belts:
You have 3 options.

Heavy Belt: +25 to +35 Strength
I like the Heavy Belt because of the +HP and +Physical Damage gain from strength.

Rustic Sash: +12% to +24% Physical Damage
If you have no need for more HP, this is the clear choice for a belt. This belt is also good if you run a 1H and shield for extra boost in power.

Leather Belt: +25 to +40 HP
This belt provides a higher amount of HP than the Heavy Belt. Take this belt if you have a small HP pool.

Amulet:

Rings:

Coming Soon...

Flasks:

Granite Flask, Quicksilver Flask, Amethyst Flask, and 2 final resistance flasks to compensate for your 2 weakest elemental resistances. Example: My duelist has capped Fire Resist at the moment, so I would run a Sapphire Flask and a Topaz Flask to help my other resistances out. Typically you want your Topaz Flask to dispel shock, Ruby Flask to dispel Ignite etc etc etc.

-------------------------Leveling Guide 1 to 60+-------------------------
This section is being edited. I will be done in a couple of hours :D

Act 1 Normal
Spoiler

Coming Soon...

A good blend of Damage, Health and Regen, and some accuracy to help out your start.
Green circles show newly acquired Passive nodes.

What stats to look for on early gear:
Look for +HP, +Physical Damage, and move speed boots! Using an Orb of Alchemy or Transmutation on a 2H isn't a bad idea either. A good weapon is very important to this build. If you ever feel like you aren't dealing enough damage, chances are you need a weapon upgrade. A MAN IS ONLY AS GOOD AS HIS WEAPON!

I typically run 2 HP flasks, 1 Mana Flask and 1 Quicksilver flask at this level.

Remember:

- Make sure your Flasks are current with your level!

- For the second quest, Mercy Mission, take the Quicksilver Flask for the reward from Nessa.

- Avoid fighting too many monsters at once. You are quite vulnerable to physical damage until you get the Iron Reflexes Keystone. A shield and 1H weapon might help you out in this situation.

- Use Cleave and Fire trap for good AoE skills until you can get Cyclone.

- Merveil, the final boss of Act 1, is difficult for any melee, so purchase Cold Resist rings from Nessa before you venture into her lair. Also, keep that Quicksilver flask handy for her second form: she summons exploding tentacles (Fire Trap helps with these!), and you need to outrun them. If you run out of Flasks charges, just use a town portal scroll to refill.

Act 2 Normal
Spoiler

Coming Soon...

Remember:

- Always make sure your Flasks are current with your level!

- Act 2 can be a real struggle, the Spin 2 Win build takes levels to get going. Press on!

- Get your hands on an Enduring Cry skill gem asap (level 19 required). This can help immensely with your defensive issues.

- I don't help any bandits, instead I opt for the extra Passive point. If I would help a bandit, then Oak is a clear choice for me on Normal. Don't worry, having a man-crush on Oak is perfectly fine.

- Act 2 dishes out plenty of Chaos Damage. I usually deal with this by kiting around enemy missiles with a Quicksilver Flask. It's a smart idea to become good at dodging enemy missiles, and this is great practice.

- The end boss of Act 2 (that wimpy robot that hides in a pyramid) can be very difficult, ask a friend for help if you can! Otherwise, try running the Temporal Chains curse and a 1H and shield. Dodge the girly Lazor that he shoots, but run away (try to be a man about it) when he switches his arms and winds up a large physical attack on you. Mobility is key to winning this fight. As usual, if you get low and run out of Flask juice, just portal back to town to refill

Act 3 Normal
Spoiler

Coming Soon...

Yet another big pile of strength, along with 2 Keystones and 15% attack speed. After you are done with Act 3 Normal, you will definitely feel a boost in power. You will start using Cyclone instead of Cleave soon, along with Life Leech support gems.

At this point, your gear needs to be itemized correctly with your class. All your gear needs to provide Evasion and Armor, HP/resists/life leech/+physical damage! Also, keep trying to max out your resists and HP.

Remember:

- Cap your Fire resist when facing General Gravicious. He has elemental resistance along with chaos resistance, and a high Armor rating. Pull his nearby guards away from him and DPS them down if you can before engaging him, as he provides a large energy shield for them if you don't.

- The end boss, Piety, is capable of dealing all 3 elements worth of damage. She will normally cast lightning spells, but she can use blue portals that she creates to become empowered with ice, and she can also snag red portals to become empowered with fire. My advice? RETREAT IN A MANLY FASHION. The empowered form she takes is temporary: wait for it to wear off. I try to cap lightning resist for this fight.

She will also summon adds that you can use to refill your Flasks if you can, but town portal if you get low on HP and low on Flasks.

Extra resistances and some Life Gain and Life Leech. Good defensive stats.

Beyond the Spin

Now that I am getting to a higher level, and depending on what weapon I am using, I would start to seek out specific weapon Passive nodes to up my DPS. However, keeping defensive stats topped off is a priority.

There are so many options with how the build evolves from here; this is just the beginning. Let us know where you would take the Spin 2 Win build!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Random Man Tips:
- Life on Hit helps early. Use Life on Hit support gems if you don't have Life Leech support gems yet.

- Use Proper fight setup. For large clusters of enemies, Leap Slam into Enduring Cry is a great way to initiate, then you can use a Quicksilver Flask while you Cyclone the pack of monsters down. Once the pack gets low on life, I spin away, and curse them with Warlords mark if I want, then dive back in.

- Survive the Dive. Don't dive into a pack if you are very low HP. Instead, use your Devouring Totem on slain foes to get some life back. If you are too low to cast Devouring Totem, just use a Portal Scroll to go back to town to fill your HP.

- Physical Reduction always above 60%, this is BEFORE endurance charges are calculated. Hit "c" and click on "Defence". There you will see your estimated physical damage reduction verses monsters your level.

- Keep it Defensive. When deciding on a piece of gear upgrade, typically choose the more defensive piece over a more offensive piece. Armor, Evasion, Resists and Max Life are very important to real men.

- Use resistances that are applicable to the zone you are farming. Farming the ledge? Get those lightning resist rings handy for the Unique boss totem. Farming the Docks? Fire resist bling. In fact, rings and flasks can be a quick and cheap way to bring your resistances closer to the cap (normally 75%, 77% with my build).

- Don't Overcap resistances or physical damage reduction. Endurance charges will give you a 4% boost to elemental resistance for each charge, remember that when researching your next piece of gear!

- Warlord's Swap. As you gain more Life Leech from gear, it becomes less important to use Warlord's Mark against large packs of monsters. However, I ALWAYS use it against single target bosses due to the manly math working out in your favor. Bosses and rares will have higher Armor than normal monsters, meaning you deal less damage and leech less life. Warlord's Mark helps with this.

- Quantity and Quality gems are great. While farming for items, you can switch out a support gem in Cyclone for Increased Rarity or Increased Quantity. Make sure to use them with a Culling Strike support gem when farming for items with a group!

FAQ ------------------------------------------------------------ FAQ

"Why don't you run Molten Shell/Heavy Strike/Searing Bond/Blood Rage?"
Yes, it's true that these gems are red and the initial feeling is to incorporate them somehow into your Spin build. BE WARNED: These skills are good, but they are honestly meant for different builds. Molten Shell/Searing Bond/Blood Rage, with this build, make your setup time (the time before a fight where you curse and cast totems etc) WAY too long. Here's an example:

You see a large pack of monsters that you want to spin into and destroy. You have 2 options: Spin into them, immediately killing all monsters, or waste 30 minutes setting up 2 curses, 3 totems, Blood Rage, Molten Shell, Frenzy Stacks, fondling your Flasks, selling gear, Checking Gmail.... Notice a pattern? Too much setup = not enough killing and winning. The whole point of this build is to quickly dispatch your foes and move on.

"Can I play other classes with this build?"
YES. In fact, a Marauder (also a man) can do this build in the exact same fashion. A Templar (sort of a man) might be OK at it as well, but they start far away from the Dexterity part of the tree, and many of the skill gems you use require large amounts of Dexterity.

"You don't have any specific weapon Passives. What an idiot!"
As much as I love spending 12 Orbs of Regret whenever I get a weapon upgrade, I find it far more realistic to do a generic Passive tree build until you get to the End Game and find that ONE weapon you love, whether it be a sword, axe or mace. At that point, it is definitely better to grab specific weapon Passives (+mace damage, + axe damage etc) and ditch some generic "+melee damage" Passives.

Be careful: many of these specific weapon Passives come with nodes that give you accuracy: a worthless stat since you have the Resolute Technique Keystone.

REAL MEN DON'T MISS.

"I have -60% Chaos Resist with this build. Is there anything I can do to about this?"
Yes, it's called a Portal Scroll.

All joking aside, everyone who doesn't run Chaos Inoculation has issues with Chaos damage. It's a fact of life. There is a +8% node you can grab near Iron Reflexes that can help. Couple this with Chaos Resist gear and an Amethyst Flask, and you can start to manage Chaos damage. This build honestly deals with chaos damage better than some other builds do. Low Life Templar, anyone?

"How many max endurance charges should I run?"
I run either 4-5, depending on if I Overcap a resistance. If you would Overcap, it's better to run 1 less charge and spend the Passive point elsewhere in your tree.

The Passive Tree isn't a static thing, it changes as you acquire gear. This is a very important concept! As you gain resists through gear, you can begin to refund any passives that give you the same resists from the Passive Tree. Always stay capped resists if possible(counting endurance charges). Defensive stats > Offensive stats.

No Concentrated Effect linked to Cyclone? Must have pretty low DPS then.
Where is the build itself btw?
