So I have been hearing about this game and I finally decided to play it, after the mass of people saying this was a great game. So I'm currently downloading the game (it's downloading in the patcher) and I decided to check out some information. I read about the classes and I stumbled upon my favorites: Damage, and attack speed (especially damage). I was wondering, which should I get, Marauder or Duelist? I'm used to playing games with pure damage, but a mix of attack speed and damage sounds nice. What do you guys think? :D Thanks!

The Duelist has a better start offensively, the Marauder has a better start defensively. In the long run though it won't make a big difference.
If you try to build a melee character based entirely on 'damage and attack speed', you're going to have a bad time. Even with the recent balance changes, monsters hit pretty hard and you need to make a serious investment in defence to deal with that.

If you like attack speed, the Duelist area is surrounded by it. As well as damage boost on axes.
Axes? Wonder why he has a lot of axe nodes...
Why not?
Duelist is the Strength/Dexterity hybrid. Axes are the STR/DEX melee weapon. Duelist also has access to pure DEX melee (swords) and to a lesser extent, the pure DEX ranged weapon (bow).

Interesting. I'll definitely look in to that. How would you build your character offensively and defensively as well?

take a look at exilepro.com and look at some speccs posted there - then you'll get a feeling hot much of any given Build ends up beeing put into damage and how much into survivability.
And you NEED the survivability...

Alright...survivability I understand, but how do you get that survivability?

You stack a truckload of health and armor (but mainly health). You use granite flasks and endurance charges.

@OP.
I suggest just jumping in the deep end and giving it a shot.
Don't get too attached to it, just get some experience and then start another character, once you feel comfortable with your level of understanding.
Reading things on forums is one thing, experiencing them is another entirely.

@OP
If you are looking for a starter friendly build that does not require expensive gear that new players doesn't have then I can highly recommend this Marauder melee build that is based on suvivability and designed for new players:

I am using this build my self since I started out in the Anarchy league this weekend, and I love it.
Had some difficulties at first, but as soon as you get some decent starter armor and a decent 2H mace the build start shining IMO.
