Confused about the lore
I'm in Act I right now and doing my best to follow the story, but most of it is leaving me confused. I like the atmosphere and all - nice to see something different than the usual demonic invasion plot - but I really feel as if I'm missing critical details.
- What exactly is supposed to be Wraeclast and why is our character exiled there? - What is the state of the world in which Path of Exile takes place? - What is the "Eternal Empire" NPCs keep referring to? - What is Prisoner's Gate? - Who is Dominus? Thanks in advance |

Story is still developing; they just added the "Letters of Exile" in Lioneye's Watch, and there are also "weathered carvings" coming in patch 11.0 that explain a bit about various story elements.

Dominus is the bad guy. he's also the high Templar who ordered your exile to Wraeclast, which is a continent many are exiled to - with the hope they get eaten by zombies, skeletons, huge bears and Rhoas (the charging birds).
the Eternal Empire once ruled Wraeclast from their imperial throne in Sarn. these guys experimented with the skill gems you use, in ways of Thaumaturgy. which basically means shoving gems down one's throat. nice guys. especially two people named Maligaro and Shevronne. they probably got the idea from an ancient civilization which ruled before the Empire did - the Vaal. who had a queen (Atziri), who was into manipulation of souls, and other crazy stuff. now Dominus wants the secrets of this dark art - presumably to become all-powerful and take over the world - and he sent the Ebony Legion (Blackguards) with Gravicius for this purpose. Piety is his main hench-woman. a sexy-version Dr. Mengele of sorts, it's her job to explore Maligaro and Shevronne's "labs", read old notes, experiment (you'll see in act 3) and report back her findings. a race of "barbarians" called Karui eventually toppled the Eternal Empire (or did they?). Prisoner's Gate has a magic barrier set up by Shevronne to stop the Karui invasion in case her deformed pet Brutus doesn't. this barrier is activated by Piety when you try to move inland on the Emperor's Road, and later removed by you in Act 2. much as OldeSchool mentions not all of the details about events and circumstances are fully in place, however for the most part you will develop a better understanding about the particular questions posed from the character's perspective as you progress throughout the realm. For related reasons specific information is not always going to be explicitly available or perhaps even detailed accurately; there are a few examples of different perspectives expressing a different account of a situation so it might be reasonable to suppose the same can be assumed of any other historical or contemporary matter discussed.

This game has lore?!? Lol, I've played through all the diffs like 5 times and I don't think I've ever listened to a single thing an npc has said. I should try it out.
We tested it extensively Last edited by Icholas#7287 on Jun 2, 2013, 6:52:51 PM
