Good class for first time solo player?

imo CI is a very very bad idea for your first char, firstly it's very gear dependent, second you have to be aware of the downsides (full shock duration), and thrid you'd probably want to level as a witch and leveling a witch is just meh... no life, no lifereg, crap skills, dependent on spells (no dmg while gems are below level) - at least I don't like witches...

Just put your points in CI nodes, use discipline. You will have plenty of ES with plain bad gear. I wore blue chest till the end of Act 3 Merciless and was doing fine

As for leveling - leveling witch was the easiest experience I've ever had. She destroyed pretty much everything with FP. Freezing pulse scales really well, so having +1 to cold gems increases your DPS by good amount. LMP even at first level scales DPS as 210%. Wand - 50-60% spell damage is easy to get even in normal

Ooh shiny - exilepro looks to be a useful site :)

thanks again!

Definitely going to try out the LA duelist first, but the CI totem witch looks to be a good 'secondary' character to level alongside, and keep maybe 5-10 levels behind.

I'm trying a shadow dual claw build. I'm not a good player so the lofty heights most people get to are out of reach for me.
i LOVE THE ya! ya! CHICK CKICK slice and dice. I can see only speed is saving me. I never could get a dual assassin anywhere in D2. Since I'm not good I will try stupid off beat builds just for the hell of it.
If anyone has any suggestions about what's best for a dual claw anything it would be appreciated.
Thanks

the only somewhat reasonable thing that I heard of was using dual-strike with melee splash and increased area of effect
The thing is that the range on melee-splash is rather around you than in from of you and you have to hit something in melee-range to do damage with it in the first place, so you don't get good range and have to be surrounded to do reasonable damage. If you are surrounded you get stunned and die, so you'll want unwavering stance, but if you are surrounded you'll die anyway later on.
Sadly it's inferior to elemental cleave Templar in every way - and you can't use cleave with claws.
Melee in general is something you do for the challenge, so maybe not the thing you want to do if you call yourself a bad player, but hey, you can allways get better ;)

@dima: to be fair - my CI experience is limited to a dual dagger shadow at the very start of open beta who didn't get higher than lvl54 or something due to constant dying.
And my witch experience is limited to a HC (planned as rain of fire, played as Frostnova for the first levels) Witch who died with lvl15 or something in the cave of the allflame-Quest to some flicker-mobs who never were any problem at all with templar/marauder/duelist/ranger
So I can't really recommend a witch for a new player who might quit the game if his first 20 levels with a witch might be an ordeal. ;)

With CI you should follow same PoE rule as for any other build: put everything in HP(ES) nodes.

Flicker mobs are quite bad for witch, granite flasks are mandatory
i would recommand summoner witch for solo

not gear dependant, all you need is 4L gear

"The CI spork witch seems a bit more passive than I'd like for a first character"

Think summoner would fall even lower on the passive scale.

Ele cleave is a great one, does good damage with high survivability and doesn't require any uniques or quality gems. (Although you'll want to get a quality cleave as soon as you can afford one, but it's not necessary).

Another good build is Lightning Strike. With a good weapon it does insane dmg. A high quality LS gem is nice, but not needed. Here is a video overview of my LS build: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivbaAbGUsD0

If you don't have much currency I would suggest going with a non-crit build that gets Resolute Technique instead of being crit focused like mine.
I second that a CI character as your first is generally a bad idea. You will be frustrated.

I think a marauder is the safest first character class imo, at least it's really hard to screw up the starting point.
Go for Lightning Arrow Marauder or Duelist.

Good

Solid

Easy to farm

Good killing speed

Decent defense if you know how to use skeleton totem/decoy totem, and kite

As for Duel Spark totem, yeah it takes a bit to get used to with the stunnes, freeze, shock etc...

and gear is usually more expensive for a CI user too.

So go LA, can't go wrong!
