Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
" There's still plenty of those games around. You simply choose to not play them. YOU are choosing to play a game that babysits you and holds your hand. If you actually wanted to play the games you're talking about, you would not be here pretending to be "hardcore". You would be playing UO private shards, Mortal Online, Eve Online, Darkfall, and so forth. Hell, you could be playing D2 for that matter. At least there you can PK. It's completely fair to chose the games in the carebear genre (like this one), but you don't get to make that choice while at the same time pretending to be e-tough. At least not without the rest of us 30+ guys knowing you're full of shit and just blowing hot air in a transparent and pathetic attempt to impress people over the internet :D Last edited by Squirry#1746 on Feb 11, 2013, 3:03:00 PM

" But this game isn't one of those hand holding games. Look at the skill tree. Diablo 3 held your hand, couldn't put in your own stats, couldn't build your own skill tree, instanced loot, etc. This game is just much more fun overall due to the possibilities of what you can do. I'm sure GGG will add all kinds of extra fun stuff eventually. I also find it terrible how people can't say what they like about a game without being called an "internet tough guy". |

imho, making people rush for the object isn't such a good idea :
- the runing ranged player is not dpsing when it's happening and may put his mate in dangers if he just rushes it. - it breaks any teamplay if there can be one, it justs encourage people to be selfish. A 5 sec timer would allow much more flexibility, I really don't see the point of an "adrenaline rush" to get an item that is meant to be picked for you .... and any lag spike will ruin it with such a low timer. That is something that is really not encouraging me grouping for example. SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading. " Actually no, I don't think you're here for anything sinister against GGG, just as I am not. We just have differing views on what is best for this game. I don't agree - secretly or openly - that instanced loot is a good option for this game. I played D2 for years, I played D3 for quite a bit (mostly to kill time while I waited for PoE to jump into open beta), and now that I've logged a ton of time with PoE again I just think FFA loot is the right (and only) design choice. The timers are a nice touch to allow people the opportunity to grab an item now and again, but if the difference is truly latency-related for many people then add 1 second to the current timer and call it a day. If the only reason you're missing out on items is because you've got 200ms ping and other people have <100 then an extra 1 second should provide you all the time you need to grab items that have been temporarily allocated to you. That's the only olive branch I'd be willing to extend from my 1990's FFA loot hut of laziness. |

how about a pulldown to let the people select between two modes when they open up a coop like ...
1. the lol+rofl we're picking each others stuff because we're such a bunch of elite guys and we love the cut-throat atmosphere and such. or 2. instanced loot. ... and case closed. - Best Signature Ever - Last edited by BestUsernameEver#6698 on Feb 11, 2013, 4:53:28 PM

" FFA is not the "only" choice for ARPGs. It's one intended to make you compete with your "team" mates. Period. That doesn't exactly engender feelings of friendliness. If the intention is to make you hate your co-players as much as the mobs, then it certainly gets the job done. And I doubt 200ms ping is the real trouble keeping players from grabbing loot. I'd say that distance from mob at death coupled with perhaps a group of mobs still banging on you------ are the inhibitors. I suppose I could just ignore those mobs, and grab for loots. If I die, that's what I get for being too interested in LOOT in a LOOT game. Weird. How about this gem from the Weissman's reddit: " Really? Could have fooled me. Since I don't feel "shared or vicarious joy" when a drop with my name on it gets snatched by "SinisterNinjaDeathRobotCrimsonBloodMurdaPainz153124690" as I'm still swamped in mobs looking to 2-shot me if I'm not busy PLAYING THE GAME instead of GRABBIN' FO' THA LOOTZ. In fact, I sort of feel anger and frustration. But then, I suppose that is the "only" design choice, yeah? |

At first I didn't mind the FFA loot system too much, but the more I play the more it just doesn't make sense. I've played in groups where there were no ninjas, and people would hand over items that dropped for someone else - this was usually a lot easier to focus on actually killing the mobs and less stressful then having people drop everything they are doing to loot or sit on someones item. Unfortunately these groups do not last long as eventually new players join and just start grabbing everything.
There have been times where an item drops at my feet and i click on it 3 times and my character shuffles around like an idiot and someone else grabs the item when I had plenty of time to get it. I guess the idea is that its cutthroat and its "everyman for himself" yet your in a group, sharing auras fighting the evils of Wraeclast trying to survive as a group - alternatively there is zero repercussion you can have. Steal something from someone in real life and I don't think they will be very happy about it. I'm for the pooling of all items, so everyone can see what drops unlike D3, however the timer needs to be much much longer, or better yet - loot options for parties. The biggest problem is it promotes greed, and this is the internet after all, so generally good ethics aren't common. That being said I think PoE does a hell of a lot of things right and has some great new ideas to the genre (flasks, end-game maps, etc), but the loot system causes a lot of unnecessary strife. It's almost like a social experiment. Last edited by krys2k9#1796 on Feb 11, 2013, 5:22:43 PM

Has anyone considered a shorter timer but if the guy who's name is on the item is near the item the timer doesn't run out kinda thing

Could we not just leave the loot system as it is currently, and just move the items so they drop to the feet of the player whose name it is?
May the RNG be with you always.
