Question from a casual player

You don't. If you don't do the mechanic you won't get the necessary currency, simple as that. You must depend on lucky drops to ever get an upgrade. This is the game we are playing. You ether go SSF or you hope the next leagues will be less busted

PoE2 is not for casual players. This is hardcore Souls ARPG game.

It's pretty easy to craft a decent staff with +5 levels to spells with a perfect essence and crystallization omens. Engage with the crafting a little. You don't need to buy gear

If you want some advice, it's not perfect, but it's advice:

#1 Mind play: you assume you are already defeated, that is your first mistake. Being casual is just a stereotype.

#2 Pragmatism: your lower fantasy is playing X build; not yet, select a build that doest require stats very spread, instead a build that requires the minimum ammount of stats beyond resistances. Go for a Energy Shield build. My advice, go Contagion/Essence drain. Requires life, energy shield and chaos/spell damage, pure intellect (Dex/str for supports is very manageable). If you go for a ultra complex build without much time and low experience, you fail on #1.

#3 Experience: there's no easy path, this means you will fail, you will suffer, and you will retry as many times as needed. After you play a full season with 1 dedicated build, next season you will be able to identify the gear it uses, this means even if you don't know the value of many pieces, you know from the previous build which is valuable or not. This will scrap you extra currency instead of vendor gold. You will be better prepared for content.

# YouTube: many stuff you see will demoralize you, many explosions look fine but they sometimes make a 20 second clip out of hours of farm. Be mindful of that. You can't compete with someone who play 8 hours a day. Be reseanoble.

# Magic Find: Rarity is your friend, specially at early league or if you play solo, some builds are easy to get rarity to 80/100%, Essence Drain necron is one of them. You don't get meaningful loot on mapping alone bellow 80% rarity. Don't evaluate drops by map, evaluate by stacks of 20/30 maps.

# Currency: raw divine drops are rare to get, search online for mapping strategies, there's lots of meaningful farm.

# Future: every league you gather experience for the next league, your fails today are your next league successes. That is your motivation, expect gradual learning curve accross leagues, not days.

# trade: trade is trade, learn to search, lots of people are upgrading gear and dumping their old at affordable prices for liquidity. There is always something worth for sale up to 15/20 chaos. Of you did the above, 20 chaos isn't a problem, specially with magic find at 80%

# help: If you want you can join my group, we can try to help and share our stuff... We are playstation people, but discord isn't a problem for us.

# dread: yes this league is far from being engaging for myself, but it is not dead. Read #1 again.

That is exactly what he should not do, he should use this league to gather experience and overcome problems for a better chance next league... Either in trade or SSF, though trade is still better.
