But armor can only do so much when a hard hitting mob like Kole or Oak hits me, as one should expect. For those encounters having a enough hp (or better yet -- don't get hit!) to survive the hit is paramount, since you'll only get about 5% mitigation in those situations.
Getting crit by boss is really bad. I believe there is only two ways to reduce critical damage, Enfeeblement and Enemy Critical Strike Multiplier Reduction. If you face an act bosses make sure at the very least enfeeble him.
I tanked and killed Oak on Cruel. He never did more than 5% of my health. IIRC he was 3 or 4 lvl above me. I won't be fighting Oak on Merciless because I need his endurance charges reward.
Physical melee are very easy to deal with if you use endurance charges. If things goes bad you have the option to go immune to physical. So bosses like Kole and Brutus will be very easy for characters that use endurance charges.

I find having high armour helps a lot, it certainly feels that way. Ive played characters whith 2k armour and characters with 24k armour, and the difference in survivability between the two feels significant to me. One character has to be careful not to get killed by large white and blue packs where the other doesnt seem to take any real damage just standing afk among a full screen of them for 20 seconds.
You got to look at resists and hp pool too, if you dont even have capped resists and youre running around with 2k health you will get crapped on, no doubt. Im not saying thats the situation you are in but you really need the full package if you are armour based, the armour for small to medium phys hits, the res for small to medium ele hits and the life pool to survive massive hits of all kinds.
80% elemental resistances. -37% chaos res, but not much that I can do about that. 2.4K life, which is poor but that's with +141%. Even if I add another 3 life nodes it would only take me to +165%, i.e. 2.65K life.
My point wasn't that I'm casual snack food for everything, but that I'm seeing no difference at all between 3K armour and 7K armour. I don't even see how I could get 24K armour, except perhaps for a few seconds with a flask if I dropped blood magic and ran with auras.

I wasn't finding it fun to spam the endurance charges skill every 10s while worrying about being battered while using the skill. That felt much too much like being a person playing at being a bot - frequent repetition of a simple task is for computers, not for people playing a game.

A lot of melee players going for Iron Reflex instead of endurance. I strongly believe that is the wrong way to go. However with max endurance charge (9) and Iron Reflex you will 90% physical cap without a problem.
My character used (lvl 48) to max out physical resist at 90% without the use of granite flask on 6 endurance charges. At lvl 52 with 7 charges I believe his physical resist is around 80%.
My elemental resist is at 80% cap as long as my charges are up. I have the option to bring it 90% if I use elemental flasks.

As oppose to clicking the right mouse button? Give me a break. I have no trouble microing endurance charges. It require a certain amount of skills to constantly keep your charges up instead of brainlessly right clicking.
