Greater Essence of Opulence

Tried using the greater essence of opulence on a magic Gold Ring ilvl 82 ring that has no rarity on the prefix and a T2 21% roll on suffix, also has T4 17% increased chaos damage for the prefix. But I get an error saying "the item already has a mod of this type", instead of filling in with rarity on the prefix slot and being upgraded to a rare item.

Rarity essence mod is a suffix.

Could be both though. Helmets, amulets and rings can roll these on both sides.
