Can't open PoE on XP on Parallels.‏

Hi,

Basically I am running Windows XP on Parallels on a Mac.
So the unofficial mac client has many bugs and it fairly unplayable due to the cursor not aligning and lots of crashes, however it at least runs.
When I run PoE official client on XP it says 'could not find any compatible Direct3D devices'.

Mac:
10.8.3
3.1Ghz i7
8GB.

XP Professional
Version 2002
SP3
1GB.

I understand it's a driver issue not a PoE issue.
I can't get other games to work either... all different driver issues.

Software is completely up to date.

Latest solution is to get Windows 8 for bootcamp, however to save me time, money, and effort... a fix for this issue would help a lot.

TIA.

What type of video card do you have, and does it show up in the Windows Device Manager or anything as that actual device, or is it being detected as a generic video adapter? If you know what type of card it is, you can try manually installing the latest drivers for it and see if it helps.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB.
Windows Device Manager doesn't find the above.

Device Manager > Other Devices > Video Controller (with a yellow questionmark icon) is the closest thing I can find to a graphics device.

I found the correct driver on NVIDIA's website for manual installation.
The driver installer states:
This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

So it seems that Windows XP on Parallels isn't seeing my graphics card whatsoever.

So.. that yellow exclamation mark means that it finds a device, but it isn't installed correctly. A lot of the time, you can right-click on that and go to "Repair" or something and there should be a way to manually specify the driver for the device. When you get that option, point it to the folder where you extracted the NVidia files to. It should find something there it can recognize and install.
Thanks for your help but whenever I try to automatically locate the driver it doesn't find it.
When I manually select the folder with the driver stuff in, it also can't find the driver.

Wizard error after searching for driver:
The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

So it's not recognising the driver at least as the correct one, if a driver at all.
Not such a wise wizard.

The other devices are PCI devices. There are two. Both with yellow question marks. However same issue as above when trying to locate the driver.

Appreciate your help and will try anything to get it to work. Thanks.

One other option is to find the .inf file (which is where you need to point the driver to in the "find drivers" part). When you right-click on it, there is a "Install" option. I don't recommend using that unless you cannot install any other way... but it's an option.
I'll give it go a go, however there are:

31 display drivers
HD Audio driver
NVVisionUSB driver

So any guess which one it might be?
They're all in the same folder.

All the names begin with NV or nv.
Assumably for nvidia so I don't know if it's possible to narrow it down by name.

Thanks again.

I'd have to know the names of all the inf files to even have a chance at checking. Usually a search on google can be of assistance.. you can also look inside the .inf file (it's a text file) and see what driver it says it is. It's part of the contents of the file.
I'm not sure if this is any help, but I found this site with some drivers and supported adapters listed. You might even want to try installing the driver they have listed.

According to that, the inf file for the [DEV_0FD1&SUBSYS_365B17AA] NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M is nvlai.inf. The part in front of the NVIDIA is the device ID that is unique to each hardware model. It should be listed in the device in device manager on one of the tabs.

Edit: the hardware ID can be seen on in the Properties of the device in Device Manager by going to the Details tab and change the dropdown to "Hardware Ids".

Appreciate your help.

So I check all the driver I.Ds which confirmed that Parallels cannot see my NVIDIA Graphics driver. This is obviously the issue with why it can't run games, because it can't find a driver. I can't install manually as stated before, it returns 'This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.'

I don't want you to feel like you're wasting your time, if you can't help that's okay.

I found a forum that says
"
Windows under Parallels can't directly use your NVidia 8600. You have to install the Parallels drivers, and not all games may work with those. If you want full gaming support, you've got to go Boot Camp.

However, somebody in Path of Exile forums stated
"
I run parallels for on my machine for work so i tried it on there... the performance is mediocre but it works...

I found that Parallels has a virtual videocard instead of using my Macs which is why I can't find it in my driver/devices list. Parallels virtual videocard has 1GB of RAM dedicated with 3D accelerator on, so I think that's enough to run games.

Any further help is more than welcomed.

Thanks :)
