Need ideas on how to recreate D2 Frenzy Barbarian in PoE

As the title says. I want to make a marauder (because it looks most like a D2 barbarian) that is as similar to frenzy barbarian as possible (including no AoE if that is called for).

I need ideas, and also if anyone actually played a frenzy barb in D2 to high level (mine was around lvl 30) his input would be even more valuable.

So give me your input on skills, passives, keystones and supports and weapons (not sure if I should go two swords or two axes)


I played a frenzy barb in d2 to lvl 92.

Love the idea of swinging wildly and fast with two weapons. Was even cooler though because it was 2 handed weapons.

In this game the best moves for dual wield swing the weapons together. I hope they implement one that is alternating yet still effective with two weapons.

But currently you have dual strike and cleave. Cleave is a mild aoe and would use it any time you have two or more mobs.

Important part is gear and what supports you use, and depends on if you go more of an elemental route, elemental damage is powerful right now with super fast weapons.

After next patch should open up for more viable builds.

I don't have a build that will work for sure for you, but I would just come up with your own and play it, and if you lack defenses work on more hp, or if dps isn't good enough pick up more dps points, pick a route that lets you have some freedom. And just play it, this is beta, not hard to remake and get ideas for release, so give it a go.



A build that takes advantage of current mechanics. Shoot for hp and high elemental damage on gear. And fast weapons, faster the better with ele damage, phys damage is ok but is not king right now.

Cleave support with concentrated effect, weapon elemental damage, faster attacks, mana leech, and maybe added fire damage in place of faster attacks. But damage wise concentrated effect would be best for damage, second would be added fire or weapon ele depending on type of weapon and gear. Can use even one support and be effective, but i would say go with at least 3 link prefer 4.

Mana management will be critical but should be fine.
If you have high physical damage weapons run hatred aura, if you have low phys fast weapons, run anger possibly, won't have the int for wrath.

Dual strike, support with any of the above minus concentrated effect. Can also do life leech or life gain on hit for fun.

Really just play with it and do what you like, build was just to give you an idea of what is available around you.
Looks like I didn't make myself clear. I am not looking for a effective build, I am looking for similar as possible build. I don't need general advice on how to make a melee marauder, I been playing this game for a long time.

Cleave is a no-no, no such ability in D2. I will be using Frenzy skill for sure and not Dual Strike. Enduring Cry instead of D2 barb shouts.

I would guess any kind of supports can go as they don't really change how Frenzy animation looks.I chose Frenzy only because it looks a lot like how Frenzy looked in D2, also when starting to hit enemies just like in D2 you get faster and faster with each hit. Well then you can auto attack with frenzy charges. You really cannot completely mimic the frenzy barb from d2. Get 5 frenzy charges and lots of ias from passives and fast weapons? I dunno what else you are wanting. Any decent frenzy barb also had a weapon specialization and shouts, or another skill, not to mention frenzy hit nearby targets also, hence why on tristram runs you would shout to make the mobs run so all your frezny damage went into the ubers.

All those mechanics are not in game, so you will still need defensive passives and other methods of play to even be able to progress. Anyways good luck, but based on your very specific question there's not much of an answer other than get more frenzy charges.
Ran into first problem. Blood Magic support + Frenzy means 37 health is lost per hit :D

Looks like I will need to take some mana reduction cost passives until blood magic gem can level and reduce this crazy cost

Use flasks for mana if you wait till you are low then chug it and keep swinging you will use all that mana believe me, my double swing marauder does.

I played every barb you could imagine in d2 multiple times to lvl 90+ including multiple frenzy barbs.

Personally I'd go raw physical (frenzy barb right) focusing on lots of 1 h and dual wield speed and damage nodes instead of choosing a specialization.

Notice I was able to pick lots of speed and damage nodes for 1h/dual wield and still managed to get a respectable 60% armor increase, a 52% life increase, 105% damage increase and 35 ias from nodes. Of course this is all in theory and gear will play a huge factor as it does for any purely physical melee build.

On paper I feel I could pull this build off in Merciless focusing on using frenzy.
