Espirito bugado

The character's spirit level doesn't increase when equipping an item that grants additional spirit. Currently, with magic active, I have 54 spirit remaining. When I put on a +57 spirit amulet, it's as if I had nothing equipped. I still have 54 spirit but can't use magic. Is this a bug, or is something blocking a higher amount of spirit?
