I delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Path of Exile/Path of Exile.app and then run PoE from Applications and see an update.dat created. Presumably that was just downloaded from GGG. That update.dat gets unzipped to recreate the Path of Exile.app folder. So it seems that update being downloaded and the one from a full fresh install is an old version that GGG isn't allowing to log in.

As for it being a free game, some of us have paid GGG more money for this than for other games that keep working more than a couple years.

Workaround :
1. Go to game files folder
default looks like
Users/$username/Library/Application Support/Path of Exile
Then delete Path of Exile.app
2. Start game from apps folder via default launcher to get poe.app then start game
Working until close game, next start will be bugged so we can go to step 1.
