The REALITY of Bossing with Melee in POE2
|
I have been recording my Huntress Playthrough. Although I forgot to click the box for SSF I have not traded and don't intend to. Exalts, for those in trade league, add a new random modifier to a rare item; they aren't just "gold".
So "The Vision" is that bosses should be hard and, you know what, I agree with this. I want to slaughter whites but bosses should make me think and plan. However there are some serious issues with the boss design in POE2 that make it very very hard to boss with any Melee skills. Principal among those are point blank one shots that cant Be dodged. Ground effects that, as a ranged player you can dodge but as a melee char you cannot dodge and there are no tools to mitigate this for melee. We can look at this boss fight as an example. Takes me a couple tries to kill queen of filth. First from a one shot that erased 800 life in one hit and only if I had the reflexes of a F1 driver could I have avoided it. Second from the ground effects. Poison pools that I MUST stand in to hit the boss. https://youtu.be/3PWSSG06x2M?t=2191 By contrest the boss fight with Ketzuli in the temple of Kopec is Beautifully designed. https://youtu.be/R4GEUl0_KNw?t=909 There is a challenge of bullet hell, the flight and explode, this has what I love in an ARPG Boss. On the other hand Viper is ridiculous for melee. She literally stands in poison puddles that would kill you in 5 to 10 seconds and you have no way of damaging here with any melee skills or you will die. Its not like those poison puddles are spread out around her and you can maneuver to a clear nook. The poison puddle is so massive that it necessitates ranged play. Now I don't mind the "dodge the ground effect" mechanic but it is a bit excessive here. That being said I take that death as my bad. https://youtu.be/-RjGtYcobC4?t=1815 I ended up backing out, picking up a level and going back at it to take another shot. I got her ultimately. https://youtu.be/-RjGtYcobC4?t=2972 The problematic bosses need to be changed to not push people so heavily into ranged builds but make melee skills valuable. Either Melee need tools to deal with the degeneration or at least make them avoidable when point blank. I don't mind a fire storm I have to jump out of but the degeneration puddles are there for a very long time. I don't think I could have beaten her without glacial lance and I was 3 levels higher. Im just seeing a bad build, with some bad stuff (I saw your weapon and its not very good, some flat phys would be better than 3 affixes of elem dmg) and a bad tree.
I played primal instincts during campaign and I died 12 times during all the campaign... Yeah fangs of frost is pretty bad right now. But stop blaming the game when a lot of players can just go through game while playing melee, as monk, warrior or huntress !!! |
|
" LOL this is rich. Ok where do you suppose I get the flat phys in Act 3? What makes you think that if I could get it on a broad spear to upgrade I wouldn't? Right now I get what I get. There are no runes I can put in to help, there is no crafting bench I can craft it on, there is just the giant slot machine named "Path of Exile 2". I have to hope that when I hit it with an exalt it doesnt roll "Reduced attribute requirements" like it has for me 7 times. Oh I know ... you bought it off the market? Oh yeah you see I play SSF which is the real acid test about whether loot is right. It isn't. I have gotten like 15 exalts in 3 acts and not dropped your dream weapon. There is the problem with trade league players, they don't build, don't try to craft, they just take their exalts and buy something and think they are all the hot thing, excellent at the game. What is more, these same trade league chars will say "crafting is fine." SMH And yes, I get it you beat the campaign with a toothpick and a spoon of peanut butter. You are a gamer god. .... Except ..... you aren't. You aren't even telling the truth. So you do a melee build from scratch, no gear, no currency, no trading and just show us all how it is done. I will be waiting for the video. |

op i give you credit for trying to bring attention to all this.
but we both know its pointless. between the people that will reduce the issue down to a single statement, like bad build, or skill issue, are literally incapable of understanding all of the factors that contribute towards so many of the problems this game has. heres the sad truth. dont play SSF. get the vast majority of upgrades from trade. do not spend currency on crafting. play only the skills that actually work. play only the classes with the skills that actually work. play according the holy vision or suffer. |
|
" Well most poeple arent playing to the vision. To GGG the skills "that work" in your view are actually broken and OP. The point to bring to light is that THIS is what their vision is. A long an grueling campaign with slot machine crafting. The other reply was "just get flat phys on your weapon" like that is even possible. That means the game is nearly pure luck And if the list you said above it "the vision" they could toss half the game and simplify it. Put in gold, get rid of all crafting, done. What burns my hide is when I see trade league players say "Loot is fine" or "crafting is fine" or "get gud" and so on. These same players bought the gear off trade, used a build that someone else came up with and they think they are gaming GODS. Fortunately these people are not my intended audience. The intended audience is poeple at GGG. Last edited by Kraythax#2592 on May 5, 2025, 3:34:47 PM

First, Im playing SSF myself, 3 characters lvl 85-90 each, doing T15 maps. Only doing my own build (like ember + detonate dead).
Second, on your other post, on your video on act 3, I can see that you are focusing zombies first then hag last. I told you, you have to kill hag first you didnt answer. Yeah you can be better and game could be easier for you, just try to focus more on dangerous ennemies on pack and when you can hit for boss (like your Ketzuli boss was pretty good). Third, about your skill tree, the main idea if you want to go through campaign, is first take dmg, then take defences. You did the opposite, by just taking all nodes of defences like few of them about making more dmg by parrying ??? Is parry your main source of dmg ? Its not, its elem dmg. Take "Primal Sundering", "Catalysis" and "maiming strike" and it would be easier for you against rares and bosses. Finally, evasion is pretty bad as a solo defence. It just evade physical dmg (not elemental dmg and skills), and it just evade a part of it, so you dont mitigate physical dmg when it. Its pretty bad defence solo, you want armor, ES, block with it and later, max rez. Why Im saying that ? because you took some nodes of evasion when almost all bosses are doing elemental skills so, you wont evade it. Dont take it and take more dmg. And again, I can be helpful with people, but just stop complaining about something you know and you dont want to know. Im just exhausted by all "players" who complain about something in the game that doesnt even exist, just because "its fun" to complain about PoE2 right now. If you struggle, ask some advices and dont just complain cause you are doing like (almost) everytbody !!! Last edited by Legoury#0138 on May 5, 2025, 3:36:07 PM

" while a lot of you say is true, there is a fundamental problem with luck based loot, and gambling based crafting that do not offer hard coded guard rails to prevent being screwed over by drops and craft results. my best example in the prior league I played a ranger to level 90. NOT ONCE did I get a bow to drop that was an upgrade. EVERY CRAFT attempt at best produced a side grade. take every little shortcoming in this game and there will be times where multiple of those problems form a perfect storm of suck. because one individual found no problems during a play through is NOT a good measure of the health of the overall system. |

" I doubt you are SSF because of your "just get phys" comment. That would only come out of a trade league char. However this char is in Act 3 and I have gotten 15 exalts in this char. As for killing the Hags first I DID answer. I told you that I try to do that and have learned that when there are 60 mobs on the screen I will get pinned and killed. And finally I appreciate the compliment on Ketzuli, that wasnt the point. The point was that boss mechanics for many bosses HEAVILY punish melee. " I can look at those nodes but I have played the trees the way they are laid out. Again the point of the playthrough is that this is the devs vision. So about the tree, I have primal sundering, the only evasion specific stuff I have are 4 nodes at the beginning and in the upper right of what i had allocated because that got me to a %dex node. Almost all of my passive nodes are offensive. " Evasion being a bad skill? Huh? Well, of course I know that. But this is how they want us to play. I am playing "The Vision". They want huntress to just evade. Armor is on the other side of the tree, ES would require traveling half the tree to get it and unlike POE1 where there at 3 nodes on a race track its CLEAR that GGG DOES NOT WANT you getting out of your home tree. They make if very hard. As for "Get gear with ES" I have gear with ES as you can see but its not enough to really be much more than a pad on my health. " I am not here to convince you. You are welcome to run your own SSF Fangs of Frost, record it and show me how its done by the Super Gamer Gods. I will watch the video. You aren't even really my audience. GGG is. I want them to see it because I care about the game. If I didn't I wouldn't put in so many hours replying to you, putting up vids and so on. |

" Yeah and same here, its not because you dont fine, in your opinion, an single upgrade of your weapon (so you have a weapon ilvl 10 ?) that its the case for everybody else and game is bad. |
|
" of course not. its that no matter how hard i farmed, no matter how much currency i spent to craft, i never got an upgrade. every upgrade ultimately came from the trade system. but i could have filled stash tabs with two handed maces, shields, and quarterstaffs. but this is only one tiny aspect of large collection of problems this game has. |
