Please Explain the Lore of ASSASSINS

Not sure how but found myself fighting on one occasion with another ASSASSIN Merk and other time Ranger class, it feels good but what's their story. First time happens to me right in the beginning act 3 cruel .. never experienced it last season, is it new?
Anyone knows who they are?, btw their loot is not bad..
