Regal Orbs rules, and Magic and Rare item definitions.
I'm starting this line of logic based on POE1 and Diablo2 definition of what is a Magic item and what is a Rare item:
Magic item can have at most 1 prefix, 1 suffix. What makes it a Rare is not solely it's beauty yellow color but going beyond this boundary. And it is related exactly to the name of the item. Having more than 1 prefix or more than 1 suffix makes the item rare. So, as an example, when using REGAL orbs on a item with 1 PREFIX, it should not make it a rare adding a single SUFFIX. Because if it ends having only one prefix and one suffix it still may have a magic name (prefix+itemname+suffix) normally instead of a rare name. This setup of 1 prefix and 1 suffix and still being rare only happened when using annulment orbs on POE1, and is not achievable on D2 as there are no way to downgrade items there. So... I have just used a regal on a item with only one mod, and it turned rare adding a different type of affix. Is this really design intended (what would be saddening) or is it something that was overlooked? Last bumped on Apr 11, 2025, 9:48:23 PM

What is the definition of a "rare" item? - I think is what you were trying to answer here
I also don't understand the logic GGG has, but I also don't really care/haven't thought of it before since there are many other problems of actual essence that need fixing. What I actually care about is getting crafting material to actually craft weapons. I don't have currency, therefore I end up having to use the same equipment for 20+ levels at a time. It makes the game so sluggish and unrewarding, it's ridiculous and unacceptable. Loot needs a quantity and rarity buff ASAP - I think many others share this sentiment |

Rarity: Currency
Regal Orb -------- Upgrades a Magic item to a Rare item, adding 1 modifier -------- Right click this item then left click a magic item to apply it. Current modifiers are retained and a new one is added. Shift click to unstack. It's intended and in POE 1 behaves in the same way. |

" I have tried a few times there and the results on regalling a single affixed item was adding the same type affix, but now while writing this reply I've tested on craft of exile and the regal eventually really added the opposite type of affix. After that I've entered POE1 again to test a few more tries and, indeed, is sometimes does add the opposite affix. So the Magic and Rare definition is the amount of each affix type they can have, and not the relation to the name I thought before. " Actually the definition doesn't matter at all if the Regal Orb really forces the item into "Rare" state without considering all those rules I've mentioned. The point is, as I clearly already stated: is it intentional by design or was it overlooked? That WAS the point. But as SpinHall helped me to realized, the regal works the same on both games even thought their texts/descriptions are not exactly the same. Who was overlooking something was me. A staff member may delete the post. I'm not concerned about that anymore. |

it's intentional. the definition of rarity for items defines their maximum prefix/suffixes but does not limit the minimums.
Magic items are defined as having a maximum of 1 prefix, 1 suffix. they can have less, including 0. Rare items are defined as having a maximum of 3 and 3. but can have less, including 0. It may seem weird but this does make a difference for poe1's crafting and adds some depth to the way player's can influence the outcome. "Beidat honored the pact, though Mancy wouldn't take off Doryani’s prototype."
