Elemental Spells should get more Love!

First off: I played a cold Stormweaver in 0.1 (without Trampletoes, with Temporalis to make Frost Wall my main bossdmg, crit based few dozen Divs investement up to including T4 Xesht) and a Deadeye Lightning Arrow+Lightning Rod also up to including Xesht T4.
That´s why i compare elemental spells with bow skills here.



Numbers + comparisons

This is without taking support gems or passive tree or other gear into account.
The only used stats are a bow (with different tiers/dps) and +Gemlevels for casters.
I also didn´t compare everything, but tried to take a few spells of every type that would strike me as an offensive (not utility) skill.


Bowskills
T5 Bow - 420 dps [320 hit]
T3 Bow - 580 dps [450 hit]
T1 Bow - 800 dps [600 hit]
note: i use T1 as the best possible tier, so T3 is 3rd highest tier etc

Spamable:
Lightning Arrow 250% (90% atkspd)
-> 945/1305/1800 dps

"Cooldownbased":
Freezing Salvo 172%/10Proj[12+max]; ~10sek cd
-> 1720%
-> 5504/7740/10320 dmg

Setupskill:
Lightning Rod 72%/9(max20)Arrows/8Chains [3 Attacks with +2 Proj]
-> 5184%
-> 10783/15163/20217 dmg
+2 proj from other sources than scattershot: 16589/23328/31104 dmg


Spells
+10 Skilllevel [+3amu/+2focus/+5weapon]
note: this is close to the maximum you can get and results in INSANE manacosts

Spamable:
Arc
207-1175; 1,1 casttime; 10 chains
-> 753 dps

Fireball
431-647 bolt; 1,2 casttime; mainproj ~58% more dmg
-> 449 dps bolt - 710 dps mainproj

Eye of Winter

53-79; 1,1 casttime; ~10 projectile hits; 75% more dmg if passing groundeffect
-> 600 dps [1050 if passing ground]

"Cooldownbased":
Flameblast
822-1233; 75% more per Stage [10 Stages]; 15sek cd
-> 8733 dmg

Frost Wall
502-753; ~3 hits; 5sek cd
-> 1883 dmg

Setupskill:
Lightning Conduit
316- 949; 50% shock (150% Magnitude) -> 200% more dmg; 5 additional hits -> shotgun?
-> 9488 dmg [1898 if no shotgun]

Coldsnap
2271-3406; needs freeze
-> 2839 dmg


TLDR:

While spamming Lightning Arrow deals around 1300 dps, the average spamable spell deals around 700 dps.
If you compare the cooldownbased bowskill Freezing Salvo with similar cooldown based spells, Flameblast is quite similar in damage output, although has longer cooldown, and Frost Wall gets vastly outperformed as a damage skill by around 4-5 times.
In terms of "setup based skills" Lightning Rod has (as we probably all know) an incredibly good damage potential while Coldsnap - needing a frozen enemy - seems unusable in terms of damage for me, Lightning Conduit - only needing the shock - seems to be the best elemental spell by far if it can shotgun (would be nice if someone could confirm, i didn´t test the new one).


More love for spells

Having all those different amazing weapon types with their own "gemtree" and flavours, i think it is a missed opportunity to not have a page of gems for each element. Right now chaos spells are squeezed into minions and all the elemental spells are put together leaving little room for more interesting interactions within one element.
Imagine having a whole page of only fire skills, using a "Heat"-combo system, or ignite as a fuel for building interesting spell chains, resulting in your own "burn it all down"-playstyle fantasy.
Lightning spells could play around a static system, build static - explode it in electric flashes etc etc.
Of course this is all a LOT of work, but as a caster-lover - especially loving single element fantasies - i feel like there is not a lot of choice in PoE2 right now.
It boils down to: get my spamable, get exposure/debuff/curse, get something that may resemble a combo and hope for the best.
In the beginning of 0.1 the "cast on"-gems were interesting because it made you feel like a true mage, raining stuff from the heavens, only held back by your manapool - yes it was op and needed a nerf, but now it´s like the mage got sent back to mage elementary school and is doing his little fireballs and nothing more.
Combine that with very low basedamages that are not really improvable and CRAZY manacosts and it is obvious why only a few % of the whole playerbase plays elemental casters.


I would love to see spell improvements in the future, because i can imagine, how cool it could feel and look in PoE2s world.

So this is just a caster problem right? The current 'meta' clearing build is lightning spear amazon.
Seems like casters have had a rough start in 0.2, but there are buffs in the recent announcement.
Fire skills especially seem like they're on the slower side of things.

Yes, my post is about casters (spells).
Elemental attacks (skills based on weapons) have several good options.
