How much Armour do you need for maps?

Unless you have armour in ridiculous quantities, it is useless.

This is a myth perpetrated by the mathematically illiterate.

The armour formula, which you can pull from the Mechanics thread, is
physical damage reduction = armour/(12*damage + armour)

So let's say something is doing x damage to you. When you gain 12*x armour, the formula goes
(12*x)/(12*x+12*x) = (12*x)/(24*x) = 12/24 = 1/2 = 50% physical damage mitigation
That means you can take twice as much physical damage and still live. If you gain another 12*x armour, it goes to 2/3, and you can take three times as much and still live. Another 12*x, and you can take four times as much.

12*x armour = 100% more physical damage survivability (double)
24*x armour = 200% more physical damage survivability (triple)
36*x armour = 300% more physical damage survivability (quadruple)

Going from a single to a double is a bigger increase than going from a double to a triple.
Going from a double to a triple is a bigger increase than going from a triple to a quadruple.

Of course, no one (or at least very few) have that much armour. However, the principle is the same:
Going from a 0% increase to a 10% increase is better than going from a 10% increase to a 20% increase.
Going from a 10% increase to a 20% increase is better than going from a 20% increase to a 30% increase.

In conclusion:
* It's the first armour you get, not the last armour you get, that does the most. This is why Granite Flasks and IR+Grace are awesome and actual armour from armour is underwhelming.
* Energy Shield is awesome.
* Acrobatics sucks.

get a Granite Flask, roll armor increase % on it and Surgeon's, if you have Inner Force node, you will have enough armor

i have Body and Soul plus the 8% nodes in front of it on the very left of the web, and i have 12k armor with the Granite Flask

^ This.

For perfection, get a shitload of ES, then add your choice of Chaos Inoculation or Kaoms + Grace + IR.

10k armor is good in my experience, if people tell u that armor is useless and run 0-5000k and do map fine, realize that you can beat a map without being touched once but in certain conditions, along with the proper map affixes and monster type, this kind of people will get 1 hit Ko by a rare monster leaping into them with extra crit dmg aura and to bad u had vulnerability curse on from the map affixes to.

btw like that guy explained the first few armor you get is the most important, i got 10k armor with 50% reduction and when i pop a granite with molten shell i have over 40k armor and 75% reduction.

geting hit by 2k instead of 4k costing me 30k armor is just sick
conclusions:
-the more armor you have the less random death you get from this kind of uncertain conditions.
-people say max resist is a must, well i have 85% resist and if a map rolls -25% max resist then ur resist become garbage, by this people´s stupid logic u should not get resists iether.
- many will tell you armor sux and granite flasks are enough, if it suits your play style to press 1-2-3 every 4.8 second for granite to pop everytime u play you character then go ahead.

- some people make retarded statements like "i run with 7000+ armor but it is useless" then why in the name of god you have 7k armor, take off grace and determination if you dont need it.

- other statement that should be pointed are "dont go for armor, it is enough to have grace determination iron reflexes.... " well if you dont have those 3 (which provide armor) then i would say go for them, in other words "GO FOR ARMOR it is not useless"

Armor is useless when you actually need it unless youre at 10-15k stock with 30-50k vs heavy hitters. Running around with 5k armor just makes you semi-resilient against monkeys, squids, tiny spiders and the like, which almost every decent endgame build is resilient against to begin with. Any hard hitting monster on a 70+ map is going to cut through sub-10k armor like butter.

Builds that cant reasonably mega-stack armor are better off just running a granite or two and focusing on more reliable forms of defense.

from 1k armor or less to 20k-30k easy peezy. At least thats how i do it on all my characters.

You don't *need* any armor for maps. Armor is only one defense out of many.

Having at least a Granite of Iron Skin is very, very recommended though.
