cannot "resurrect at checkpoint" after dying in act 2

I have ignored the quest "Earning Passage" in the beginning of act 2 and ventured into the desert. Upon dying, when clicking the "resurrect at checkpoint" button, the game refuses to do so claiming "You do not have the required quest state."

Correction, this appears to be happening at any time now when I die in act 2...
