From A3 Normal, it has appeared to me that the River Hags in Drowned City have changed where they spawn the drowning orb. It now seems to spawn close to the hag, between you and her, rather than being cast on top of you.
The one time it ended up on my head was when I was close and ran into the same spot that she was casting. Hopefully this is actually the case, as it makes a big difference. I didn't see it in the patch notes, but it was consistent for them in Normal A3 over more than a dozen hags. The hags still often spawn in groups of three, mind you. | |
I don't like the drowning effect much. Haven't died to it in a while, but whenever I do, it's a real, "Ahh, man!" kinda reaction.
I do love the idea of it, though, and it'd be a shame if it was removed outright. Here are some of my problems with suggestions in spoilers: 1. The visuals are surprisingly subtle. Like, if you make lightning, any time you press a button, you make the screen brighter and bluer. Well, I guess drowning makes the screen bright and cyan, but I rarely make that distinction in the moment.
Spoiler
Could use more elaborately animated effects, like rushing water and bubbles. And maybe the screen could fill up with water from the bottom, and you die when the water touches the top.
2. The audio queues are surprisingly subtle.
Spoiler
The underwater sound filters should be obnoxious. Your character should make disturbing drowning sounds. It should be impossible to ignore.
3. As far as I know, it's the only alternative death condition in the game and is introduced unceremoniously alongside other new enemies. River hags don't stand out much at first.
Spoiler
In another game, you could imagine drowning being introduced as a boss mechanic first. Like, the first thing a boss would do is instant cast it on top of you, and you have to run out, and now you know to look out for drowning.
