Damage calculation for dual wielding appears incorrect

Hello :)

Short:

Two weapons with similar stats result in lower damage when both are equipped compared to just one. Why?

(I understand the 30% penalty, but shouldn’t equipping two similar weapons still increase damage?)

Sample with HotG (Hammer of the Gods):

Weapon 1:

Weapon 2:

HotG with both weapons:

HotG with only the first weapon:

HotG with both weapons:

HotG with only the first weapon:

Thank you for your explanation! :)

Best Greetings

It only shows main hand damage in the tool tip. It does not show the offhand damage in the total, but in-game, it will deal the offhand damage.

If you add up what it shows for the main hand and offhand manually, it comes out to much more than what it shows.
It's worth noting that +2 maps are a dangerous thing.
They can cause players to get out of their depth -
playing maps that are too hard for the items they currently have. Herp Derp.

Thanks for your answer!

By tooltip, do you mean the displayed DPS value next to the skill and the detailed tooltip with blue text? What confuses me is: if only the main hand damage is calculated, why is the value lower when both weapons are equipped? Is it because of the 30% reduction?

Can you explain me please how I can calculate it, this would help me alot!

Best Greetings and many thanks!
The average damage per use and DPS it shows are both just based off the main hand damage.

To get the actual average damage per use, take the average damage of the main hand and offhand and add them together.

To get the actual DPS, multiply the actual average damage per use by the attacks per second.

I tested this by equipping only one weapon at a time (first "main hand," then "off-hand") and noted the following values:

Main hand:
Average damage per use: 320'178

Off-hand:
Average damage per use: 306'424

So, the combined average damage per use is:
320'178 + 306'424 = 626'602

The DPS is then calculated as:
626'602 × 0.58 = 363'429

This means the tooltip values should display:
DPS: 363'429
Average Damage: 626'602

Is that correct?

Thanks again for your support!

Edit:
-> The 30% penalty is missing right ?

It shows the main hand and off hand damage in the screenshot in your original post below average damage per use. It shows the main hand total damage, main hand physical damage, main hand fire damage, off hand total damage, off hand physical damage, and off hand fire damage.

The main hand total damage is
207,067 to 367,951, or an average of 287,509

The off hand damage is 209,287 to 383,491,an average of 296,389.

Adding those together, the average damage per use is 583,898.

You must have a bunch of dual wield damage nodes, because this is ~180% of the damage you get from equipping just one weapon.

You mentioned that the tooltip only shows the main-hand value, which is 306,546 or 320'178 (still don't understand really ;)). Even if we apply the 30% penalty (reducing it to 214,582), it’s still far from the actual value of 287,509.

But when I understand you correctly, wearing both weapons instead of one is a lot better :)

Yeah, I am not sure where the displayed damage goes awry or even if my suggestion is a correct calculation, but if you hit a boss with 1 weapon equipped and with 2 you will see the actual damage dealt to enemies is much higher.
