PoE 2 needs "keyboard event" controls for the PC client to make the controls more ergonomical
Right now there are a lot of one-button builds in PoE 2, but that may not be the case in the future assuming that GGG still want to keep the game balanced around skill combos. While we can bind extra hotkeys to mouse buttons using Shift or Control as modifier keys so we can use lots of skills with the mouse, that's not the most confortable hotkeys to use, and pressing buttons with our left hand isn't a good option either since we have to constantly keep the WASD keys pressed while moving. This problem could be solved if the game had an option to enable "keyboard event" controls so the same key could be bound to different actions depending on the type of keystroke.
For example, I could have a spammable skill bound to when my mouse click is held down, but if I double clicked the same button then a different skill would be used, so with this we can basically multiply the number of hotkeys we have with our mouse so we do not have to rely on our left hand for the activation of skills. The only downside of this method is that it introduces a small amount of input delay, but it's possible to let the user configure that parameter to make the input as short as possible and to only affect specific keys, so if I only wanted my left mouse button to work like this, then every other button would work as the default way. As a way to better visualize what I'm suggesting, we can look at the controls in Escape From Tarkov, which is another game that has a lot of comands that need to be hotkeyed: https://imgur.com/Ei9YFzv As we can see, I configured the "4" key on my keyboard to perform three different actions in the game depending on how I press the key. If I press "4" then my character will do "action A", if I release "4" then "action B" will be executed, and if I double click "4" then "action C" will be performed by my character. Also notice below the image that I can configure the double click timeout, which is the time the game waits before it can decide if I performed a single or a double key press before the action is performed. In addition, I can configure these controls for individual actions so the input delay will only exist on the specific actions I want it to. Without keyboard event controls, the only way this is possible is through complicated (legal) macros that listens to the input of my mouse and replaces those for a new output, so having keyboard event controls buil into the game would help a lot at making it more ergonomical in the PC where we do not have twin-stick controls. they also use extremely basic keycodes for handling input.
this unfortunately leaves some important options off the table. i will personally suck every dick at GGG headquarters for the ability to bind abilities to scroll wheel up/down. |
