Help Explaining how Bleed actually works and triggers

Trying to do a ignite bleed build, and trying to make sure i understand how bleed actually triggers and works correctly because its getting confusing fast.

nodes all over that give 5% bleed chance and extra bleed magnitude etc. but what exactly can cause bleed.....

from my understanding bleed is based off your physical damage, but what if a skill like molten blast converts 60% of physical damage to fire damage will this still have a change to cause bleed or does it need to be all physical damage I'm assuming the other %40 of the damage is going to hit as physical unless it doesn't hit at all and only hits for 60% of your physical damage as fire only I want to make sure i understand this before i waste more time trying to figure out how bleed works ,
now if we look at the blood mage ascendancy she has a node bleed on critical hit im assuming this will work with spells , projectiles or melee long as it critical strikes ? and it doesn't need to be physical damage?

could you explain this a simple and easy to understand as possible

thanks in advance

bleed damage is based on physical damage, period.
unless there is something somewhere which says bleed damage is based off all damage dealt, which i don't think exists yet - it has to be physical damage

if you convert 60% to fire, then only 40% of its damage will be counted towards the bleed damage, if you cause a bleed.

if blood mage can cause bleeds on critical hit, it has to be a critical hit with physical damage. doesn't matter if its an attack, projectile, or spell. as long as its physical damage

the damage also has to be done to life to be able to inflict a bleed. if all your damage is eaten up by ES, then it won't bleed even if you have 100% chance. it has to damage life
so how do i know if a skill does physical damage , if we look at molten blast it doesn't say physical on the top it says AOE\Projectile\fire , but your saying that would still cause bleed?

Hammer of the gods says AOE\MELEE\slam , Obviously Melee is physical so that would cause bleed correct? cause melee is a physical attack ?

so end of the day how do i know what skill causes physical damage and what doesn't

if you open ur skills and then click that little arrow thing at the end you get a detailed breakdown of the damage being done, the change to proc stuff like bleed etc. on a controller its opening the menu on the skill and selecting advanced info.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)
Never thought of using that , so long as is says physical damage in there im good to go pretty much I'm assuming

thanks for all the help guys so much to learn but im enjoying this

Quick note here: Melee != Physical, they are not always related concepts.

Melee Attacks can deal zero Physical Damage through a sizable number of factors, for example: 100% Physical to Elemental/Chaos Conversion, a modifier such as "Deal no non-Fire Damage" (Avatar of Fire Keystone passive), or by using a weapon that has no innate Physical Damage on it.
