Breach Monsters are able to attack several inches past the breach (invisible)

When doing breach if I stay ahead of the breach opening I get hit by monsters that haven't been revealed yet. I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to work but it feels cheap. I've had multiple times where I'm fine well ahead of the breach and then suddenly I'm dead. Then while on the death screen the breach continues to reveal like 15 monsters I couldn't see or hit that killed me.
