Rod Ferguson was right, and people laughed at him

Rod was Right.
and man, POE2 is hella boring. Visuals are horrible. Systems are bad. Having a blast playing D4, best ARPG ever made. |

" a corperate goon who works for actibliz as a D4 lead who has never been involved in making or even spent a significant amount of time playing a diablo-like game who went on twitter when poe2 released to ask the arpg community if we could start calling arpgs "diablo-likes" in the same way people call games like dark souls 'souls-like'. D3 and D4 are not 'like' diablo 2. actibliz didnt make diablo 2, blizzard north made diablo 2 and they are no longer attached to actibliz, or microactibliz? what even are they now? i tell you what theyre not, theyre not the developers who made diablo 1 and 2, they are not arpg fans who have even played those games or any arpgs much as paying players. the devs at GGG actually spent 1000s of hours playing D2, David Brevik from blizzard north who made Diablo 2 comes and talks at Exilecon. rod ferguson is a clown who needs to go away and find out what a diablo-like game is and how to develop one. if he wants to find out he should probably attend an exilecon and talk to david brevik and chris wilson. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

For one thing; if we're renaming the genre then its D&D-likes not diablo-likes.
DIablo 4 is a Diablo-like and not a good one. derivative, uninspired and shallow as a puddle. imitating the look with none of the substance, like a JJ Abrams mov...anything... anything JJ Abrams. Rod wasn't right he was trying to gate keep with no right to do so like a yappy porch dog thats brave because of the pitbull napping next to him. Rod as I recall had nothing to do with ANY genre defining ARPG's. And isn't self aware enough to feel self conscious when he tries to imply that his Diablo has more than a superficial resemblance to the genre defining originals. POE2 (and 1 before it devolved into a space shmup) are love letters to D2. If you understand the basics of what constitutes a ARPG or "diablo-like" Not that anyone needs to re-name the genre, ARPG was coined on gaming usenet forums in the 90's to describe what Diablo 1 was when all the snooty CRPG players were turning their noses up at its distilled refreshingly visceral and humble D&D gameplay loop I know from first hand experience, because you can find my real name attached to usenet (probably in comp.sys.ibm.pc-games.rpg or whatever it was) posts where the term ARPG is being thrown around as the newly coined name for the new genre. Thats how long ago that was. Imagine putting your real name on your internet posts LOL. 4 is just watered down imitation. just like uninspired movie reboots that are worse than the original movie they've "lost signal" and "missed the point" like back in the day when you made a recording of music that was being played on the radio and your recording had lost something, it had worse signal to noise ratio. just because the current uninspired IP rights holder makes an imitative game and slaps the name they own the right to on it doesn't make it the authoritative genre defining exemplar. This is why Rod's tweet got so much well deserved pushback. D4 is a Diablo-like in the worst sense: copy cat, uninspired, crafted for mass appeal over substance and imitative in the most shallow and superficial extreme. If POE2 isn't your cup of tea thats fine, but I can see what they're doing here and its easily the best of the genre already. If GGG can sack up and get control of their self inflicted scoping problems at end game anyway. Pandering to players who don't want consequences for their mistakes is a perfect description of what went fundamentally wrong with D3 and 4.
If they wanted mindless mobile game time waster gameplay they sure did make some perplexing choices and marketing statements for 6 fucking years. |

Rod Ferguson white knighted the IP not the game and didn't say anything positive or constructive about anything, but the inference due to timing was it was negative about PoE
I'm not even sure how the statement goes into a "right" or "wrong" bucket unless you're standing up for Rod Ferguson's marketing skills |
