Why is death penalty still a thing?

With how slow the game is, why do you still lose 10% experience when dying on maps?

This should be removed. Every modern game, like D4, doesn't have this outdated mechanic.

Also map sustain is awful and I can't even sustain a T4 maps. Don't have any reason to play now. It's ruthless 2 in current state, even after buffs.

Meanwhile party players already abused the game, got 200+ exalts, 20K ES builds and killed the pinnacle boss.

Agreed, why is GGG punishing players like this? This is a game, it's meant to be fun. No one enjoys being slapped because they want to experiment.
spell caster in PoE 2 is like putting a ruthless mode on ruthless
I agree, losing exp on top of losing a whole map is just bad, it's stressful I'm sweating while playing, afraid to miss something that will kill me and erase an hour or more of progress.

And this is the thing, dying is already a punishment in itself, especially while mapping. As you all point out, you're already losing anything you might have made in the map that you couldn't collect.
Just to make some points. Here's stash in the Settlers. I farmed Sanctum, Ultimatum, maps, etc. Played 10+ hours in row and found it fun:

Waiting for next PoE1 league, I hope now when they have their ruthless game, POE1 will be finally nerf free and only introduce us more power.

Now PoE2 I can't even force myself to play more than 3 hours a day.

Story is great, the level design is great (although too much maze-style maps).

It's good game to complete it once (for the story and bosses). It's not good game to play it for more. Just like Souls-likes I guess.

Same here, I had a lot of fun farming currency and sh*t during Settler, and Poe2 is already starting to get on my nerves. And I haven't reached the ugly endgame with 1 portal maps and exp penalty yet. Redoing the same 3 acts in cruel mode is giving me a headache.

I made a post saying EXACTLY the same thing, XP death penalty has no place in POE2, put it in Ruthless mode ONLY!
Harsh conditions and death penalties give your items and accomplishments value. If anyone could do it easily, the value would disappear. It's as simple as that. Now you can try to argue against it, but it won't make any difference.
Because they want that you earn it to reach level 100, did someone really earn #1 spot in a race to 100 if he died 10000 times and the other player who was a bit slower only died a few times?

No death penalty is why the leveling part of D4 is absolut meaningless.
