Trial of Ascendancy town portal issue

Hello! Awesome game so far, but I just lost progress because of what I assume is a very unintuitive design decision. I was doing the trial of ascendancy, which drops loot. So when my inventory was full, I did what is standard in every action RPG and portalled back to town to empty my inventory. Apparently this makes you unable to teleport back and completely bricks your progress, forcing you to start over.

It would be fantastic if the game could either warn you ("Are you sure you want to leave the trial? You will lose all progress if you do"), or not let you open a portal at all. Or better yet, actually let you portal out and sell stuff between rooms, as I intuitively tried to do.
